I'm in the market for a Dobro and was looking at the Paul Beard Gold Tone in a shop earlier today. Seemed OK to my untrained ears...
Later, I found a Dobro on consignment at another shop that just blows away sound-wise anything I've heard elsewhere. With a little research it seems to be an '81 OMI Dobro, (sn 811943D).
It has a flamed maple body and neck, some slightly tarnished gold hardware, including resonator cover. The gold doesn't do much for me, but the sound really does.
The seller is asking $1500 on consignment, which leads me to believe I can talk down the price a bit, but is this even in the ballpark? It DEFINITELY sounds way better than anything else I've looked at so far.

I had a 1980 Dobro with the same gold hardware. Elderly put it at $1300 on consignment for me. I later traded it to my friend. If it is clean figure $1100.00 - $1200.00 less if it is nicked up. Here is the link to the one I had at Elderly's

I agree with Russ-he's right on the money (no pun intended).
If I were in the market I'd buy that baby and hot rod it with a Quarterman cone for about $55. Then it would be killer!
Goldtone Beards are outstanding imported guitars, but a nicer, high end Dobro from the OMI period is preferable, IMO. Notice I put Goldtone before the Beard name. Paul designed it, but it is built in Asia. It is not an actual Beard guitar built in Maryland. I'm not saying anyone in this thread doesn't understand that, but I have run across a couple of folks that truly don't get that point. The best ones though are those that upon arriving here in the States, go through the Beard shop for setup and inspection.

Thanks for the info guys. Russ, that is definitely the model, although the maple is a bit more figured on the one I saw today. I may make an offer, this one kinda talked to me..

Don't get too caught up in the "figured" look of the wood-top layer for aesthetics-those OMI's are laminated wood guitars.
