Hello
Got some special records today, funny in a way,but some good playing as well.Seems like all of these were made for the square dance market. If possible, let me know who played steel on these.I guess they are all from the 60`s/70`s.
1:Georgia mountain fair:Steel guitar hoedown/Steel guitar meets Joe-Black Mountain Valley Records out of Kentucky
2:Houston Ramblers-Guitar fiddle and steel/Toot,toot,toot-Blue Star label out of Houston Texas.
3:The Windsors-Easy do it/John steel-Windsor
,seems to be CA label.
4: Country Players-Steel guitar hoedown/Hoedown blues-Scope records,label out of San Luis Obispo,Ca.
If you know any of these, and can help, please let me know!
Best from Egil. |

You are right, they are labels that produce music for Square Dance Callers (I happen to be one). In general, I think, most of the labels use musicians that are local to the area in which they are produced. A few current record companies go to Nashville and hire session musicians to produce their music but this is the rare exception.
I have a Windsor record that actually gives Joe Maphis credit as the guitar player.
I suspect that it will be rather difficult to identify the musicians as I think virtually no written records were/are kept. Your only hope is to have someone reading your post be the musician in question. I don't believe the Windsor or Scope produces records anymore, however, their masters may have been purchased by a producer still in the square dance record business. |
