I once heard that Sonny James never played a night club. If that's true, he seemed to do OK anyway. |

Had to add a reply to the original post. As well as Farris, I've been there and done that. Too many times coming in at 3 A.M. smelling bad and feeling worse. I am now playing in a Gospel group and feel so blessed to be able to play for people who genuinely seem to enjoy it. Also, as Darvin mentioned, thanks to Jesus, the retirement plan is out of this world. As long as the Lord gives me health I intend to play for Him.

I know we are not suppose to have religion on here.so i will get back on topic!!!
Some of the most miserable days of my life, were playing in the clubs.I came home sick, drunk, and very messed up.BUT i had a PRAYING wife, who didn't give up on me.
Well,i have been delivered out of that life style, and as some say they love the bar life. I personaly hate it.you will never go wrong playing for people that arent drinking and drunk. I play for weddings ect. and wow the tips are great. farris

Gospel Music is my music and has been for many years now . Making a joyful noise on a instrument of ten strings . That would be found in the Book Of Psalms 33:2 . Best regards , Gary . [This message was edited by Gary Preston on 24 September 2005 at 02:06 PM.] |

last weekend I went down town to get Ricky Skaggs DVD "Soldiers Of The Cross", great music btw.however I stopped at every bar and took a quick look to see if I can see someone I know,at the Stage guy stopped me at the door, looked at me and said "stay in the line",I looked and there it was,a line of people waiting to get in, I laughed and said "$hit" and left with a big grin on my face,it was so funny to me,I couldn`t wait to get away from the bars and now they are trying to charge me to get in,nonsence.Even if I could get in I would have probably spent 10-20 seconds before leaving again. At this point I would love to get couple friends together and put together a little accoustic show for old folks homes and children hospitals. They don`t have to pay nothing,I`ll bring candy.Sunday morning gig at the church would be a blessing also.

AUTRY,you are right,God can work in mysterious ways. There are several COWBOYS CHURCHS around, and it seems to be growing.
I have lots of cowboy friends, being raised out here in the woods of Central Florida.
Cowboys are a fine bunch of people, they will help their neighbors, and they stick together!!most all have a great SHARP knife, they use them in their daily work!!
Well,i'm getting off topic,COWBOYS is another topic.Back to the playing out of clubs.Lots of other places to enjoy clean music, and play steel toooooooo farris |

Well. I'll tell ya guys... I love the Lord and play every sunday at my small church.. I am the praise leader and play NO steel ... I am the only guitarist, and need to keep the meter together.. No drums, a bass player who does NOT know how to play[the Pastor.. a Godly, wonderful man, that I tried to show how to play bass, but its not in him] and a pianist.. Its not very good musically, but we love serving the Lord this way,and consider it an honor, and the congrgation loves us. It IS a blessing...
that being said, how am I supposed to make some money with the humble ability God gave me ?? . I NEED to make some money playing.. otherwise NO musical gear.. NONE.. No fishing, NOTHING that costs ANY money.. I pay with what I make gigging, or I do without.. There are VERY FEW bar gigs in this area, and NO gigs of any other kind...NO steel gigs at all, anywhere or anytime.I have to play guitar in a rock band at the age of 51..Played steel on 4 rock songs last night and was BURIED... Could not hear the steel even a little..anyway..
If I want to play before people and get paid for it,, I play in places that serve alcohol, or I don't play,..I sit home every weekend.
Those are your choices if you are a decent musician in this area.
What do you do???... I play.. Sometimes I regret it, often I don't.
Depends on the night and place...
Its funny,,, A Christian entertainer can play a big stadium .. thats ok right??.. But they sell beer there.. correct?.. Does that mean a Christian should not play there??... The people in that stadium have free will given by God, and can choose to be moderate, drink till they can't move, or abstain.. It IS thier choice.
I see LOTS ands LOTS of folks in bars drink Coke, or have A beer,or A glass of wine or something. LOTS...
I also see folks that get wasted.
what IS the answer??
All I know is this..Like Farris, I love the Lord, play in His service, but If I don't make a buck here and there with my gear, I HAVE no gear. NO spending money of any kind.
Typical breakdown.. $70 gig last night... $40 to my wife for the house... $10 for Katrina relief.. $20 for me to spend as I see fit..
I have struggled with this for years and have taken both sides... I just want to know how to handle it when you really do NEED the money???.. tough question as far as I am concerned... bob |

BOB,GOD BLESS YOU my Friend!!Please know i'm not condeming anyone!!i just said as the topic,i can't,and enjoy playing out of the clubs more. IN 1970 my 2 kids excepted the Lord as their Savior, and i knew then that i could not Stradle the fence.
I have played gospel groups,we have played nursing homes, prisons, churchs ect.
never made much money, but the Lord has blessed me in many other ways.
I am a firm believer we cannot out give GOD,if we give of ourselves, watch and see, it will be returned 10times in other ways.

farris.. I know you are not condemning... I wasn't thinking that at all.. you have a good heart!!
and you are correct.. sometimes I do feel like I'm straddling.. sometimes I don't.. depends on the night and place.. I don't see Drinking as the problem.. Drunkeness is..
sometimes we seem to forget that Jesus, his disciples, and MOST of the Old and New Testament believers drank.. I read somewhere in the old Testament... "God Bringeth forth wine to gladden the hearts of men".. something like that.. wine is used throughout the Bible as a way to bring joy to an event.. public and private.. leave it to man to screw it up and abuse what was given.. As a Christian musician, its not the establishments so much, or the alcohol itself, but the people that abuse it and drink themselves into a stupor.. and for what reason?? To enjoy the good music??.. not likely..
I don't know.. If a couple goes out, sees some fine music, dances a bit, enjoys a glass or two of beer or wine, or a mixed drink, and then heads home after a nice night out, is it really so bad in God's eyes?..
What if they went out to dinner and consumed the same modest amount of alcohol?
would that also be a sin?.
. I don't have the wisdom to answer this or similar questions.. I wish i did.. I posted on this a few years ago.. Got answers from MANY Christian musician brothers.. opinions varied from.. "You are going to hell Christian or not" to "Hell I'm a Christian and I get drunk too"... maybe the answer is someplace in the middle ... bob[This message was edited by Bob Carlucci on 25 September 2005 at 10:39 AM.] [This message was edited by Bob Carlucci on 25 September 2005 at 11:03 AM.] |

John you Rascal, you love to cause trouble!!
No,this topic is serious, and don't won't to get it locked up.Looking for others input.
KEEP the Possums out at this time please!!!
Number one is the Language used in a club,i don't like to be around it!!feel like a snake when i do.also I'LL say this i'm around it right here in my machine shop!!
I'm kindda at a loss for words, without getting off topic!!
Yep,BOB,you are right,Jesus turned the water into wine ect.and this has been debated for years,if it was fermented wine ect.
I understand some use wine for passover and some use Grape Juice. the Babtist Churchs i have been in use Grape Juice.
anyway to keep from getting this topic locked up, I love PLAYING outside of the clubs.they are not my kindda life.

I enjoy playing steel at clubs and having a few drinks....as long as we have a dressing room to get away from the crazies between sets. |
