I was kicking around the concept of a concert featuring steelers who became steelers because of the country rock of the 70's. You know, New Riders of the Purple Sage, Poco, Pure Prarie League, Commander Cody and his LPA, etc.
I could not come up with a catch-phrase or label to fit. They are not hippie steelers.
Do you have any ideas?

Hi Karlis,
I graduated from Highline High School in Burien in 1970, and was certainly influenced in my playing by ALL the groups you have mentioned. But I must say that the music that made me want to start playing steel was that of Hank Williams and Bob Wills. As I dug into learning about steel I came to appreciate it roots and where the the great players are today.
How 'bout...New Riders of the Pedal Steel. |

Rich, your description fits this group the best so far. I think this group is really distinct from the "mainstream" steel guitarists. I noticed a couple of references to illicit substances and I think that had a part in defining this group but the real difference is the country rock roots. These guys had a real impact on the music of the 70's, 80's, and even the 90's. They are aging a bit but not as much as the country steel guitarist of the 50's and 60's.

I was going to agree, but then Mrs. Lee reminded me that we're not really middle-aged anymore. We're just plain old now.
It was quite a wave, though. I call it "My Generation".

Sadly,
pedal steels resemble walkers a bit too much...
Geritric and the Pacemakers... shudder
Ian Anderson, from Jethro Tull, may have got it right :
Too old to rockin roll,
Too young to die.
Mebe :
Too old to Shoplift
but not too old to Steel!
