I know there’s an other Curly Chalker thread going right now, and rightly so, but I ordered a copy of Pals from Bobby Caldwell and I just have to tell everyone how amazing it is. This is a low-fi recording of a rehearsal held in 1973 and these guys play some truly astonishing music on this record. The tunes are Satin Doll, Mansion On the Hill, Lazy River, Long Black Limousine, Close to You, Meditation and Fly Me to the Moon.

If you’re a Curly Chalker fan, you’ll get to hear some exceptional examples of his powerful and inventive playing. He’s all over that steel guitar and plays with a command that reminds me of Oscar Peterson or Bill Evans. Bobby’s guitar playing is remarkable and unique. These two pals inspire each other throughout the recording and you can tell they’re having a blast. The bass and guitar lend understated support while these 2 giants stretch the boundaries of their instruments. There’s a little distortion in the recording, where the instruments overpower the microphone, but it doesn’t detract from the experience.

This is real jazz and these guys are digging deep, coming up with sounds that astound. Curly is mainly on the C6, but there’s a couple of E9 tunes that show what an emotional player he was.

These are my unsolicited comments. I bet you’ll enjoy this recording too. Get them from Bobby at www.bobbycaldwell.net.

Howard, I too am glad Bobby released this moment in time. Being a rabid Chalker fan, Scotty was so gracious to share part of this great music collaboration in '74 after Curly's "More Ways To Play" LP that Scotty produced.
As I've stated before, we don't have enough of Curly's music showcased and this was a welcomed effort on Bobby's part.
