I know that we all usually go to the convention for some great steel music but I think the caliber of singers at this past show will be hard to beat.
I'm sure I'll miss a few because I couldn't be everywhere at the same time, but I think we had vocalists who are as good at their craft as the steel greats are at theirs.
I just wanted to say thanks to the singers;
Laney Hicks, Rob Parker, Red Kilby, Mike Siler, Curtis Potter, and my new idol Bobby Flores.
I think singers like these help make the great steelers so great.
I spent more, this year, on CD's than I did on equipment.

Judging from the large amounts of applause for the singers at the ISGC, I would say...

...Yes, you're the only one that liked them.

...

(This is the part where we laugh together. )

Yes, Ben, I did appreciate every singer you mentioned. It was a real treat for me having Curtis Potter work with me on my Friday night set as, for my taste, he is my very favorite vocalist of all time.

Like I said at the beginning of the post, I knew I would leave someone out. Chris and Don Helms were great. Don told me before their show "wait til you hear this" and he was so right.
I have known Queenie for over 25 years and he was better than most when I met him and has grown into a great all around entertainer. Starla and Jimmy complement each other but she LOOKS a whole lot better.

Agree with all above statements. And please do not forget that I had two great singers on my program-Rob Parker and then my other Navy buddy from the San Diego area-Ray Harrison. I would rather play behind singers like this and not do any instrumentals at all.

Not to start any trouble, but I feel if there are too many singers at a steel show, it simply isn't a steel show anymore.
Obviously, that's not the case at ISGC, but I've seen steel shows turn into ordinary jam sessions when too many singers get on stage.
Also, I remember when Buddy E. did a whole set backing up Darren McCall (sp?) a few years ago, and while it was excellent singing and playing, it was not the same as hearing Buddy play solo...which is what a steel show is....isn't it?

I agree that there are sometimes too many
singers at a steel show, but when I'm on stage it's 99% back up and 1% instrumental.
What I listen for is how the "Big Guys" back up the singers.
Most bands have a tendancy to overplay and step all over each other. It's nice to be able to hear less clutter and cleaner more distinct instrumentation.
That being said, I enjoy hearing Herby, Doug, Buddy, Russ, Bobbe...do their thing without vocal accompaniment. Truthfully I can't play like them so I rely on being a backup player even though I get to play some instrumentals every week, I just can't do a whole night of it.

Curtis Potter, now I know I'd should have saved up enough money to go, I'll start saving up now. I've always wanted to go, never gone, hopefully I'll hear Curtis next year and go out of my mind with all the steel stuff one could ever imagine.

Herby:
I became a Curtis Potter fan at the Dallas Jamboree. His rendition of 'You Don't know Love' was awesome. Then the Bob Wills set with Albert Talley on Sunday with Curtis put me away. My wife and I are fans for life.

I have been around this country music scene for almost sixty years. Why did it take so long for folks like Curtis Potter, Ray Pennington, and a dozen more great singers to surface. Was I in the wrong place or what. When I listen to all the things that were done at Step One Productions I wonder why it bothers some to hear a singer. The things Buddy did behind Pennington and on Ray Price's " Time" Cd were great. Also the last Faron Young Cd was very good.
I love to hear fill, we just don't have it anymore. When I think of all the moves and licks that Hal Rugg and Weldon laid down behind Opry singers,Theres no room in todays music for that kind of soul.
And thats enough about that......
