as ________ is/was to __________

Complete the analogy. What's your opinion?

Ben Hogan was to Golf?
Hank Williams was to Country?
Jesus was to Judaism?

Ignore that last one. Fill in the blanks for yourself.

As Bill Gates is to computers? Anyhow, I say that because, like Bill, Buddy didn't really invent the instrument that made him famous. He refined and reworked what already existed, and presented it to the masses in a way no one else had done. As Bill is easily one of the first names mentioned in any discussion of the computer, so Buddy is one of the first names mentioned in most any discussion about pedal steel.

Isaac Newton is to Classical Physics

Albert Einstein is to Modern Physics

Henrik Bode is to Electrical Engineering

With apologies to Donny, John von Neumann is to Computers

Kurt Gödel is to Philosophy

Sigmund Freud is to Psychiatry

Charlie Parker is to Jazz

Knute Rockne is to Football

Babe Ruth is to Baseball

These are all people who fundamentally and more-or-less permanently changed the way their respective fields are practiced.

I'll stop here, this could go on all night.

Emmons is just a talented man any way you look at it. What he has done for the steel guitar will never be matched IMHO. Oh yeah, he just happens to be my personal favorite. I could sit and watch him play all day long.

Buddy is to Steel as:

Jack Nicklaus is to Golf.
I think Paul Franklin is like Tiger and Jerry Byrd was like Bobby Jones. You golfers look at the comparisons.

I dig what you're saying, Donny.

That's sortof why I put the Jesus and Judaism thing. Both of them took something that had been around a while and completely revolutionized it for a certain group of people. They each had their followers, and everybody is constantly asking "What Would _____ Do".

Henry Ford, to automobiles.
Like Donny said, he didn't invent it, but look what he did with/for it.
