Every town or country has local steel guitar players who have been contented to play locally and not seek out fortune or fame. But in some small way over the years they have contributed to the advancement of the steel guitar, by teaching, incouragement to beginners, or just passing on their knowlege of the steel to others.
In my many years I have met and in some cases became good friends with quite a few, and with this thread I would like to mention a few that comes to mind.
From the Tacoma, Wa area
Larry DeRocher (deceased)
Wally Giffin
Speedy Price
Jimmy Webb
Lee Weiss(Casper, Wyo)
Butch Butler (Dakota ?)
Chubby Howard (unknown)
There were many more who's name excapes me at the present and for that I ask for forgiveness. In some small way I would like to Hail these unknown hero's of the Steel Guitar. |

Lee I agree with you. So many talented hot rods in the world that only local areas know about. In Denver there is the C6 master snaz wahl,and dont forget clip cookson. Over in Rapid City SD there used to be a great player named Bobby Humphries. Down south in Arizona there is the monstor Danny Sneed. The list can go on and on and these people are the core of steel guitar in my book. I love my idols to death but JV team is pretty dang hot too.

Hey Lee,
Where's Vernon "Speedy" Price these days? I used to play the Monday night slot at the Club Vegas in Oxnard, California in the middle sixties when he was playing in the regular house band. I remember he played a Fender 1000 through a Super Reverb amp...JH in Va.

Hi Scott and Jerry. Thanks for your input.
I called Larry DeRocher's wife in Tacoma and she said Speedy is still in the Tacoma area.
I would like to add a couple of more hero steelers that came to mind after my initial letter.
Ray Robinson (deceased I think) Seattle area
Dick Meis (Denver)
Dick has a great web site www.pedalsteelguitar.net
check it out.
I knew of Danny Sneed when I worked at Serria Guitar with Chuck Wright (another great steeler). Your right a monster on the pedal steel. I wonder if he still plays the guitar with umteen pedals on it. Lee |

Lee, good thread. I have had the pleasure of knowing some of these players personnaly. Jimmy Webb, Ray robinson, and expecially Danny Sneed. These great players also come to mind:

Ahh..The brotherhood of steelers. Had a pleasant surprise as a result of this thread. Larry Petree (Portland, Or.)contacted me after about 35 years and renewed old accquaintances.. a great steel player and a true gentleman.
I would like to add a couple of more names to my list of steelers who I feel were friends and mighty contributers to the advancement of the steel guitar.

Pete Martell (Portland, Or.)
I think it might be interesting to relate short stories or experiences of our local hero steelers. What do you think? Maybe start a new topic. I know I could of all my hero steelers. Lee

Lee glad to see you here on the forum. Many of those names above are still around. The NW has and has had some great steelers, most of us are old now but can still chop a hot lick now and then.

Well hello Larry Behm...been quite a few years since we last met. I believe it was at the Scottys St Louis Convention. That was the year you and your partner got on stage and did a twin steel guitar show.. which was great in my book. Been many years since we formed up the orignal Northwest Pedal Steel Guitar Society.. (Remember?)

Around the Modesto/Merced area, an unknown who should have had a shot at the bright lights is John Gudgel out of Merced, CA.

hay i remember catfish john at nashville north outside of chicago. but man that was a long time ago like back in the early to mid 80's. that was before i took interest in the psg. doc

I just came across a picture from the past featuring Paul Harper and his Westerners. A very interesting lineup. If I knew how I would sent the picture, but I don't so here's the lineup:
Fiddle,Paul Harper.Bass and vocals, Jim(Tex)Holder. Piano,Dale(Glimpy) Payne.Steel, Ray Robinson. Drums and vocal, Jack Fisher. Lead Guitar, Geno(last name unknown). All are dressed in Nudie suits. This was taken at the Alibi Club in Anchorage, Ak. 1962. |

| A great pedal steel player on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, Vernon Lyons of Salisbury. A super player, still playing 2 or 3 nights a week. Those in that area know what I'm saying ! Thanks, Ron |

| There are two in my area that play seldom now due to age. Oliver English, Paul English's brother. Paul was/maybe still is, Willie's drummer. The other is Jim Lynn. They take a back seat to no one. |
