Old Curly Chalker recording question

I ran across an old bootleg recording of Curly doing jazz standards at a club. Not being an expert on jazz music, the only tunes I knew the titles to were Kansas City and The Nearness of You. Is this the legendary 1968 LAs Vegas tape with Chalker playing a Fender 2000 through the two Bassman amps? Who else is on the disc? This is up there with the Brisbane Bop featuring Jimmy Rivers and Vance Terry.

Anyway, I think I understand what Curly was all about now. Before this recording all I heard from him was on a Leon Russell album and a solo album with a bunch of pop and rock tunes, and I think I heard him on a Hank Thompson album, buried way back in the mix. I like the way he played. It's sounds like he was listening to horn players, and piano players for his inspiration instead of other steel players.

Dave, Lee Jeffries is probably the guy who is gonna have that info for you. He played me a tape of Chalker playing in a Vegas lounge with Phil Baugh on guitar that wa just staggering. Even Vance and Jimmy would have to do a double take on that one.

I have a copy of LasVegas Break with Chalker; includes "Blue Eyes"; "Shadows In Your Smile"; "Ode to Billie Joe", etc.

I also have a GREAT Carl Smith record with Chalker on it. Really great stuff!

Hi Dave,

Curly and many of the other great steel players listened to all kinds of other players for inspiration. Reece Anderson my friend and a hero of mine once told me to do just that. It works!

I am certain my good friends the late Zane Beck and Julian THarpe listened to horns, piano, ala the good stuff.

Many of these steel greats played other instruments as well as steel. I know Julian and Zane played piano some and guitar. Curly was an accomplished jazz guitarist and he play trumpet as well.

Hope this sheds a little light on these super players!

Many of us miss these guys! They were GREAT STEEL Players and GREAT Guys as well!

I have a CD with you and Curley doing Long Black Limousine, Satin Doll, Mansion, etc. You both did inspiring work. I don't even recall where I got it. Sounds like a live club scene or jam session. Where and when was it recorded?

I finally listened to the entire Chalker cd and it's from the Ranch Inn in 1964. It's not Phil Baugh on guitar, either, but definitly Chalker on steel.
