Thanks to Don Weber, Wally Pfeifer & Gerald Ross ...

The Holiday Inn's Executive Boardroom was transformed into a place where folks could come ... relax ... shoot the breeze ... trade secrets on steel ... etc, etc, etc ...

All kept safe and secure ... by our resident Pit Bull ... Harry Dietrich

The hi-light of my trip came late Friday nite ... after Jeff Strouse's tribute to Jerry Byrd / Ray Montee.

I had not played thru my set ... scheduled for the first thing Sat. morning ... in over TWO WEEKS !!!

Between finishing my steels, BS-ing in the Dust-Room and watching the various greats on stage and in the jams .... I just never found the time to practice ... and was gettin' worried.

So after the DVD (thanks Howard & Harry for the audio/visual) ... I set off to practice ... maybe 11 pm.

I was just ready to fire up my Mike Neer rhythm tracks on CD/Boombox ... when Floyd Alexander happened by ... and I con-ed him into playin' thru my set "live" on guitar.

Minutes later ... Barb Kuhns walked by ... and joined in. Since this was 2/3 of my rhythm team ... I was elated ... and we set off ... trudging thru my songs.

Looking up from my chair ... such notables as Ray Montee, Paul Kim, Doug Smith & Dennis Gonsalves ... actually sat there and gave me a listen.

What a thrill !!!!

But the true highlight of my whole trip ... was a 10 minute conversation I had with Floyd Alexander ... after we had practiced Fri evenin' ... and I was lockin' up the Dust-Room ...

I hope you are out there ... thanks man !!!!

Well I guess if that was the highlight then the low was when I was sitting next to you at Al's Steakhouse for dinner and after we were done I hit the remote control on the Fart Machine.

I'll never forget that look on your face...

Everyday I'd walk by the Dust Room at about 3pm, and I'd see Harry Dietrich on his knees facing Mecca, praying to his rig. Maybe praying that it would work.....

DustRoom Security - Harry Dietrich

Five minutes before this picture was taken there was a nefarious character in that other chair. See him now? Thanks Harry.

Here's the commander of the DustRoom, Rick hisself....doing what he does best....well, maybe second best, with 3 kids & one more on order...

Rick repaired and worked on a few guitars brought to him by others. Here he is modifying and improving Dennis Gonsalves's Excel Fry Pan. He also repaired Frank Miller's Stringmaster just in time for one of Frank's set.

I saw Rick SPEND HOURS, yes hours, unselfishly giving of his expertise, when he could have used that time to practice for his own set. A steel player can have no better friend than Rick Aiello.

A big thanks to you Rick for repairing my rickenbacher. It actually took him less time to fix the Panda than it took me to restring the guitar. Way to go, Rick.

"Quote of the Day" ... from the Dust-Room

Upon wandering into the room ... and seein' me sittin' there noodlin' around on the Bronzepan ... using my "flattie" ...

An HSGA dignitary says ...

quote:
Oh ... you play steel ???

You know ... they make round ones of those

I must say......Dave was the HIGHLIGHT of my trip.......he just blew my mind. LOL!!

Actually the whole trip was my highlight. Hanging out with old friends, and meeting new ones was just great.

Did you ever notice how Steel Guitar players are such nice people? I wonder why that is?

It was great meeting Ray Montee and his lovely wife Sally.....also Jeff Strouse, who I shared a few laughs with, along with Rick A, and HowardR.

Bill just cracked me up with his fart machine. LMAO!! Especially in the big music room when he had it behing Duke Ching, and Duke didn't know what was happening.

Also had a great time jammin' with Floyd Alexander, who is a country affictionado like I am. Thanks Floyd!!

All in all it was a great trip.....all of you people made it so.

Thanks again....Harry

Oops....almost forgot......thanks to Paul Kim for coming to this years Convention, and showing his "stuff".......He is really great. Not too many people can play that many harmonics and NEVER miss one....AWESOME!

Thanks again to all the folks who came by the Dust-Room to hang out, play, etc ...

I'll have to come up with some newer models ... so they will give me the room again next year ...

Howard emailed me this morning:

quote:
Sunday morning I walked past the DustRoom and it was empty....not a trace of anything or anyone.

Kinda sad.

Glad you got home safe and I'm sure the babies were so happy to see you.

That they were:

L to R
Dusty, Emmie, Chrissy, Tucker (in vivo) & Ellie

Aloha folks !!!
