Holy smokes, these two guys have outdone themselves!
Time Well Wasted shoots up to Chris's top pick for must-have CDs of 2005. Full of hilarity, chicken pickin', fiddle and steel, and down-home goodness. Keith, give your son a big pat on the back, and if anyone knows Mike Johnson, give him one for me, too. (By the way, does anyone have any contacts for Mike Johnson? I've tried contacting him through his website and I can't get a reply.)
Target has the best deal on this album this week--for less than ten bucks, you get their "exclusive" version of TWW, features four extra tracks, including one of my favorites, and probably one of yours if you go see Brad and the band live, "The Toilet Song". So good. Best Buy is also selling a BP live concert DVD called "Mud on the Lens"--I might run out and see if I can pick that up, too.

Mike does read his e-mail, but give him a day or three to reply. He's a busy man.
Who was the steel player on the "I'm gonna miss her" video? I think he was playing a Franklin, but I never could get a good look at him or the steel.

The unfair thing about Randle and Mike is that they can play impossible blistering fast stuff then hit the next tune and melt your heart with the slow ballads. The depth of expression those guys can to get is astonishing.

Hey there, Theresa! I have no clue which one of the two holds the smoking gun on that one! The album liner only has credits for the entire album, not song-by-song like Paisley's first three albums.  I've heard both Mike and Randle on the records, I've seen both live, and it's the straight-faced truth that either one of them could have done it, like Bob said. I was hoping someone here would know! Haha!

Ah, I don't think it's unfair. At least in Randle's case, he's a super-nice, humble guy, and he puts in a lot of time on the steel. I think he deserves the talent he's blessed with and skill he's earned. I've not met Mike Johnson, but I'll bet he deserves it, too.

As Brett said, that was Randle on a Franklin in the video. It was Mike Johnson on the recording, though. |

I just got the CD, the writting is very interesting, I guess it must be boring on the bus. What does tickle your ear is the guitar playing and the steel playing. Both RC and MJ have the hardest sound I think I have ever heard. On one cut my wife questioned whether it was a steel, it is. Some of the most inovative licks you can imagaine, and talk about FAST!!!!

| Just got the "Time Well Wasted" CD. Man you guys are so right. I laughed, I cried, I revelled in the beautiful musicianship. When I listened to Brad & Dolly sing "When I Get Where I'm Goin'" my thoughts ran to Hal & Rufus & Vassar and very much to my Dad who passed away about a year ago. Thank God for music. |

WOW!. WOW!. WOW!.
It just dawned me on listening to "How Many Flowers Have to Die"..
After listening to the "Time" album, I've laughed, I've cried, and I've sat here with my mouth open about half the time with a long ago forgotten feeling in my stomach, and waves of goosebumps. I even forgot about the ringing in my ears from last night's loud gig.
Brad Paisley's latest album has put it into perspective. This young man has something I haven't heard yet. Not with Ricky Scaggs, not with Jimmy, Bill, ET, George, Willie, Waylon, and the whole lot. Not with anybody you or I can name.
For a while to come now, I'm going to be assured that the best in my craft, no matter what, are one thing. Proudly, masterfully, longlived, and otherwise:
Sidemen.
At least as long as this young man's records are around.
Oh, GREAT Steel Playing too.. Best I think I have heard on a record.
(Not to mention the Drums and Fiddle.)
I'm stunned.

Sometimes I have to listen to a CD a few times before I pick up the "nuances".
Not so with this one.
I've been waiting for the "new Ricky Scaggs" for the song selection, production, instrumentation, lyrics, guitar playing, steel playing, drumming AND fiddle playing.
I don't know how much CRAP I've sifted through by "top artists", though, from Tim to Shania, from Garth to "Sugarland". This was "The One" two songs into it and I knew it.
EVERY lick, Every Instrument, Every song, Every production mix is what I'd point to over anything I've heard in 20 years.
It makes a lot of "top stuff" look pretty pale.
Every sideman on it can rest that they've been part of the best thing that I think I've ever heard. Not that they should particularly care.
Oh, and I BOUGHT it retail..
Blown away for sure.

| BEST $9.72 (on sale at Wallmart) that I EVER spent! I have to agree with all the above.And here I was thinking I was doing something figureing out "Munster Rag" from Brads "Part II" CD!These guys are TOP Notch fer sure....Plus, the furthering adventures of the Kung Pao Buckaroo's is truely a hoot! Indeed, a truly incredible recording. I don't think I could ask for much more from a new CD, I'm gonna wear this one out.

I've liked Brad ever since I first heard him. Good singer, excellent picker and gearhead. The fact that Mike Johnson's on the CD is the kicker.

Just an FYI, if you buy the album at Target ($10), you get an extra CD with four additional tracks, including the "Ode du Toilet" (which is now my wife's favorite song).

I certainly didn't mean to dis "sidemen" and this album above any I can remember is perhaps the only one I can remember that had a musician that seems like he deserved THE finest musicians, along "side" him, and that he WAS one of them. The FINEST musicians WAS what he got.
I contrast how what Brad was in the TNN special, a spunky funky kid playing basic licks in public for the first time on a corny gutar, while I had played bars and clubs for YEARS. My jaw drops to the floor every time I see and hear him, and I can only shake my head..
I don't know anybody that writes better songs, and I don't even care if he wrote them. I think his spirit is what shines through for me. No product of "Opry genetics", no "image machine", just him. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't care. Not that I ever do..
There's enough licks on steel alone to keep a bush leaguer like me busy with a "slow down" program for years..
It was not unlike his previous albums, which like this one will probably be buried with the crap that seems to be oozing out of you-know-where night and day..
Not for me though.
