| I have seen and played that instrument, some of the parts are non-original and I think it's a refin. At least, if the Fender factory put it out like that it was on a really OFF day. |

Both of those steel guitars are worth a lot more than the starting auction price.
Both are worth at least $1200. Of course, they are not clean enough for Mr. Clean; but they can be easily sanitized.
Scotty (St.L) has one trap. pickup with tail plate for $250.

If you want to play it clean, you must play it on a Fender. |

and buy from a reputable dealer.

eBay is also a great resource for those of us who live far away from 'the source'. Not much to choose between here, most music stores don't know anything about lap steels and the only ones I've seen are Gretch Electromatis and cheap Chinese stuff.

Here'a a reply I recieved from gcrep to my email posted earlier. I gues he liked my sense of humor. I'm not convinced he's got the BIG picture, but ...
Sadly, I'm blowing this out pretty much at cost. When you see a GC auction that is way overpriced for the market, it's almost always due to a piece being bought in for too much by a sales person, thereby determining what it can be sold for. I know the company has a bad rap for that, but it's actually due to individual sales people giving too much for a trade-in in order to make a deal happen. With niche things like lap steels, very few people really know what to look for or how to accurately appraise them. I sell only through online auctions, so it's a problem I'm constantly fighting. We're making some headway, though. Selling used gear in the online market place is a different world from selling it in a storefront, and Guitar Center is still trying to get it integrated into their existing business structure.
I'm one of only about 35 people in the whole chain who sell used and vintage gear online for GC. It's a new program, but it's continualy improving. One of the things we're working toward (and actually have the ability to do) is to only buy correct, straight vintage pieces and to pass on incorrect, issue gear. We want to be known for having the best quality vintage gear available.
I'm a musician, songwriter, engineer, etc. and this is how I pay my bills. It's a really great gig (vintage gear? yes please!) but I'm not a company man, per se. I basically function as my own business within this store, which is nice, because I work in an office on my own and don't have to sell on the floor. I get a lot of nasty emails from ebayers who, I guess, assume these auctions are run by a computer, or some outsourced corporate lackey, who is ignorant of gear and the market, and simply marches to the GC battle drums. It's nice to get a candid email, so I hope you'll forgive the long-winded response.
