Paul Kim & more photos from HSGC

Post by HowardR »

I thought that I'd start a new thread as the original has become wide and difficult to read. Please pardon the photos as the camera that I was using (I left mine home Image ) was not operating in the proper mode....I should have studied Denny's modal site.... Image

First, the guest of honor, Paul Kim.....what a great talent. He plays steel beautifully, sings beautifully, and plays uke. He is a complete artist and entertainer. A very personable and likeable guy with a humorous and kind way about him.

Paul's playing is smooth and natural. Never seems to miss a note, harmonic, or chime. He did some amazing chimes with his bar on the first fret.
[This message was edited by HowardR on 17 October 2005 at 07:14 PM.]

"The Dynamic Duo".....Bill Leff on steel, Gerald Ross on geetar, Paul Kim on ukulele.

Two very accomplished players who switch guitar & steel to back each other. I'm glad to call them my friends....not quite sure what they call me... Image

We call him How-ahd... such a good kid from the neighborhood who has a veh-ry nice haberdashery business, and quite successful I might add, kehn-ah-hora. If only we could get him to play for us some of that music he likes to listen to. Always, late at night with the guitar...

Seriously Howard, your presence (and presents) add a lot to the convention. It's always a blast spending time with you.

There... I've given you a lot of material for photos ops. Go for it.

BTW - Bernie the bass player is Bernie Endaya. Solid Rock of Gibraltar bass player and an amazing human being.

BTW2- I made the photos in the original post smaller. It's now easier to read.

The Story of.......MY NEW HAWAIIAN NAME

I wanted a Hawaiian name real bad. Guys like Don "Kona" Woods, Bill "Pilar" Creller, and others have them. I made it my priority this year to have one bestowed upon me.

In the lobby, I saw Kamaka Tom, Paul Kim, Duke Ching, & Bernie Endaya. I thought, "now's my chance."

"Hi Fellows, you know, it's my second year here at the HSGC, and I would really be honored to have a Hawaiian name."

"You must be worthy to receive an honorary Hawaiian name. We don't just give them out."

"Oh, well, I think I'm worthless, I mean worthy."

They didn't look particularly convinced. "We'll have to ask you some questions to make a dtermination."

"um, ok."

"What do you know about the Hawaiian culture?"

"Well, not very much, but I love Hawaiian steel guitar."

"What have you done to promote the Hawaiian way of life and the music?"

"Well, I can't think of anything that I have actually done, but I love Hawaiian steel guitar?"

"What Hawaiian songs can you play?"

"Well, I really haven't learned any Hawaiian tunes, maybe Ukulele Lady. But I love Hawaiian steel guitar."

"Have you EVER been to Hawaii?"

"Um, no. I once went to Waikiki Wally's in NY. But I love Hawaiian steel guitar."

They had a serious discussion, came over to me and said "You really haven't done anything to earn a Hawaiian name."

"Oh, but I really, really, really love Hawaiian steel guitar."

"Well, since you want this so badly, we'll ask you one final question. Who are your two favorite Hawaiian steel guitar players?"

Finally, a question that I could answer. "That's easy...Jules Ah See & Sol Hoopi."

They conferred for several minutes, came over to me and said...."Congratulations, you are now....HOWARD AH SOL."

Howard, I thought you told me that your favorite Hawaiian steelers were Jules Ah See and Tau Moe of the Moe Family band. That being the case your name should really be.

I sure did enjoy meeting Paul Kim ...

He gave everyone the "straight scoop" ...

He listened and helped folks that asked ...

His command of the steel guitar was flawless ...

And his singing was simply ... "to die for" ...

Wow ... is about all I can say Image

Paul's harmonics were flawless! Clear bell tones all over the neck and he didn't miss one!

And due to his artistic talent, he's got the best lookin' Fender I've ever seen.

Gerald,

The least you could have done was include the good looking backup persons in the picture to detract from my blemishes. Image

How about Bill Leff Picture? Notice closely the picture. He played such beautiful Hawaiian melodies that he put himself to sleep. He almost put Gerald to sleep, and Paul Kim is just wondering what in the world is going on. Image

Aloha,
Don
