I was delighted when Houston Jones (www.houstonjones.com) asked me to play with them at their Auburn concert. I had sat in with them at a couple of late nite shindigs at Camp Remember at Strawberry Festival of Music (www.strawberrymusic.com). This was to be the first real concert with them. Glenn, the lead guitar player, sent me a couple of CDs so I wouldn’t be clueless, since we wouldn’t be able to rehearse. One of my very favorite songs on the two CDs is one from Three Crow Town (http://www.houstonjones.com/cds_and_samples_three_crow_town.htm), a Steve Earle gem called “I’m Not Getting Better at Goodbyes.” When I was practicing for the show, every third song I’d return to that one just to play it. At the gig, I asked Travis Jones to sing it and he honored my request. I’ll have to admit that I rather dominated the backup on the tune — it’s such a perfect country tune for pedal steel. I was pleased that the sound person had me in a dominant spot in the mix, nearly drowning out those pesky guitars.

It was a nice outside gig, once the temperature dropped from 104 degrees at sound check. At quiet spots, you can hear kids playing in the background. Here's the link to the page that has the link to the fairly large MP3 (4.3 Megs).

Pete.. VERY lovely!.. Nice execution, feel and tone. It sounded like a board direct recording leaving the vocal part with that sterile vibe[no reverb or effects ] but he is EXCELLENT and I would have liked to be out front when you guys played it!. REAL nice!! bob

Thanks, Bob! Hey, between the powerful song and the kind of singer that just grabs you, you just have to play your best.

Yep, it was a board feed. We mic'd my Webb and I was playing my Dekley 12 extended E9.

Hey Pete, very good picking, very tasty and soulful. I love the low notes you include in your voicings. It's always nice to hear a nice tasty steel player. Keep up the good work!
