Can Anyone Identify a Guy Named Corky Jones?

Post by Bill Pastuch »

He supposedly recorded for a small record label called PEP in California in 1955.

Bill, Buck Owens/Corky Jones. I believe when Buck was starting out, he was doing session guitar work, and when he started recording he was known as Corky Jones. Anyone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Also, if anyones interested, the "record lady" has two Corky Jones (Buck Owens) songs, "Hot Dog" and "Rhythm and Booze".

Val, you're 100% correct. It was Buck Owens.

After Buck left Texas and came to Bakersfield in 1951 he formed a band called The Schoolhouse Playboys and he played saxophone and trumpet in it and not a Telecaster.

Shortly before adopting the aka, he started playing lead guitar for Tommy Collins.

To test the waters, he decided to use an alias by the name of Corky Jones on the Pep record label. If he bombed on the record, nobody would be the wiser, and he did.

The story, similar to the aliases of Terry Preston/Simon Crum.

BTW, what was Buck's real given birth name?

Bill, Alvis Edgar Owens, I believe after his daddy. Someone told me he chose the name "Buck" from a mule the family owned. Right or wrong??? Thanx for the reply.
