Is it me, or does anybody else notice how the sound ALWAYS sucks on a stage surrounded with "bass bins"?

Why do all the big rooms feel they HAVE to go wild with their "bass bin" budget? I hate rooms where they fly the mains way up in the air and have those huge bass monsters down on our level holding up the usually hollow stage!!! Then so we can hear whats going on over all those thundering elephant sounds, they blast those horrible barking monitors systems at us (usually with not enough "sends" anyway) that gives the musicians NO idea what they really sound like! Furthermore, when youre backing up some lame wanna be "artist" who likes to muddy things up with more reverb in the monitors etc. etc., it makes for a hopeless situation.

Theresa...When the Sound Stage Program on George Jones aired, they gave a phone number for a few seconds at the close of the program. I quick called and ordered, but I am sorry to say that I cannot find the number. I hope someone on the forum will come to your rescue on this. Watch the PBS listings for your area, they will most likely run it again and the phone number will appear at the end of the credits. I looked and looked,but cannot find where I put the phone number. Anyone out there able to help Theresa on this? Leon

It's not just you, Rick.

Last auditorium show I saw was the Dixie Chicks in Austin, and while it was high quality, it was the boominess that reminded me why I'd rather hear the music at home.
I think Lloyd Maines was there, not real sure, but at least the steel came through clearly.

Last show I saw that was excellent, Yes, on the Tormato tour. It was jet-engine loud, but unbelievably clear, with the mains suspended above the round stage, which had a solid apron, eliminating the hollow bass.
The steel sound was as good as the vocals.
You have to put really big bucks into it to get the sound out of it.

I just got back from playing an outdoor festival tour where we had to deal with that stuff. We brought along a great soundman who managed to make the stage sound balance with proper use of the side fills. Also there was no shortage of steel guitar on those gigs. They were pretty big shows( 5,000 to 7,000 people) and the mix was fantastic.

There is only one "star" at these mega venues, and that is the dude (or dudette)that the audience came to see!

All of the audio-visual management is directed to letting the audience see and hear the "star". No one except other musicians who understand what really makes the "star a star", cares a whit about the supporting cast, so it is all deja vu!

Come on guys, we have to concede that side men (especially steel-guitarists) are expendable in the music business today. If you don't readily agree, take a look at the icons of the steel guitar who are actually "unknown" for their contribution to the current venue.
