Man, now that's really a good question. I've never thought about it but if I were going to pick a city I would have to make a list and pick one off of it. Let's start with Nashville and the old Sho-Bud tradition of years ago when everybody had a Sho-Bud. Next I'm thinking about Dallas and the MSA folks from years ago that certainly left a tradition and is continuing it now. In Texas, add the other steel folks like Carter,Blanton,Remington,GFI and some others I can't recall now. Burlington there's Emmons and there still there today. There neighbor Marlen also. Mullen over in Colorado. Then of course Zumsteel and BMI. Sierra folks in Oregon. Pedalmaster in Louisiana has there folks to. In my opinion, I going to say the #1 city would be Nashville because of Grand Ole Opry and the other several musical avenues like Duane Marrs, Bobbe Seymour, John Hughey, Buddy Emmons, Don Helms, Tommy White, Paul Franklin and Jim Vess as well as several others that live and play around the Nashville area. Now if this were by state, I would have a tie between Texas & Tennessee. Good subject!

Yeah, and don't forget Steve Hinson either. He does his share of sessions and gigs in and outside of Nashville. It has to be Nashville and then Branson would be high on the list as well as about any major area in Texas.

Although there are lots of good Towns/Cities acquainted with Steel~Guitar and their Manufacturers, there's no doubt in my mind that Nashville, TN is the Steel Guitar Capitol of the World!

I feel I have the answer to all these questions in the data base of my hard drives computed over the last ten years.

Hmmm...Pittsburgh? There used to be a pretty good group that played there and they all wore the same outfits.

I would guess Nashville but I gotta say in the 9th largest city of San Antonio, if you are playing country, chances are you have a full time steel player. It's pretty much expected here.

The steel shops, players in Oregon--are any of them near Boise, Idaho?

Adrienne, Boise is a one hour flight from Portland, $89 RT on Alaska.
Portland has several Steel pickers, and Sierra is made here, but probably not exactly the most "steel guitar oriented city", fwiw.
