I was in the Army 1966-69, with one year in Nam. My father was a career GI who served in WW II and Korea (5 of his brothers were also in WW II), and even Mom was a WAC during WW II. I'm proud to have served (although I griped enough about it when I was in!), and am more proud than I can ever express of our servicemen/women of the present day. God bless 'em and protect 'em!
[This message was edited by Burr Oxley on 31 May 2005 at 08:32 PM.]

Infantry: 4th Mech. Also Berling Brigade. 70-72
One uncle shot down in a B-17 over Poland and nearly starved to death in a POW camp. And his brother, fought through Sicily and Italy, wounded twice and turned down medals stating, "the heros are dead." And my dad served field artillery and as an MP in Germany at the end of the war.

Thought I'd share this. The title is Soldier, but it's for all branches.

IT IS THE SOLDIER

by Father Dennis Edward O'Brien
United States Marine Corps

"It is the Soldier, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the Soldier, not the poet,
Who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer,
Who has given us the freedom to demonstrate.

It is the Soldier, not the lawyer,
Who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the Soldier, who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protestor to burn the flag."
