Gary Morse on Jay Leno-Tonight show

I was up last night tweaking up a pre-Sho-Bud Pro I, I just resuced and saw Gary Morse playing with Dierks Bently on the tonight show-he sounded fine and Derks really let him shine on that old Sho-Bud ProII--my hat is off to both those guys for breaking through the mainstream TV with some great talent.Thats what we need more of-people who can break through and show everyone what it is really about- talent!I have not heard that much steel on a major TV channel(not cable)in along time--If you read this Gary--way to go! and Dierks too!

Good for Gary and Dierks. Gary is a great representative of the steel community, and hots off to Dierks for giving Gary the spotlight as much as he does. Most front men won't do that a lot.

I saw it and was glad about the steel coverage both audio and video.

But dang, what a crappy song and that guy sure don't sing worth a durn.

Gary needs to get a new front man!

Thanks guys. I've done that show quite a few times but I think that was the most fun I've had doing it. Dierks really is a big fan of the steel and we could sure use more like him. He's a great guy to work for,too!
We'll be on the Late Late show (Craig Fergusson) next tuesday but I hear the production is much more scaled down than Jay's show so it may be the luck of the draw on that one.

I gotta congratulate you Gary. Not just for your great playing, for having those nerves of "steel". I didn't see the DB performance, but I saw the one you did on Leno with Dwight Yoakum some time back. You were playing solos and riffs (I think the tune was What Do You Know About Love) and they were so right on. How is it that you can be showcased on a nationally televised show and be so cool? How did you train yourself to be that way, or were you that way naturally? I would really appreciate your insight. Thanks in advance.

Jeff, I appreciate your feedback about the Leno appearance. Thankyou. To answer your question in regards to nervousness I would have to say that familiarity is certainly a musician's best friend. In the case of the Tonight Show, I've performed on there quite a few times over the past 15 years or so. In fact, the first time I played it I was with Highway 101 and Johnny Carson was still the host.
I know.....I'm showing my age now!
After awhile it's really not much different than any other gig in terms of being nervous. It's kind of like playing a regular bar gig. You've done it before and you know what to expect(although the money is certainly better).
By the way, we are going to be playing at B.B. Kings in Manhattan again later this year. Let me know if you want to check out the show.......Gary

Gary, I took a few lessons from you about 25 years ago here in Southern California. You really helped me with sound and muting. I don't play often in public; those fundamentals really help when I do, though. Are you going to be playing in this area in the next year or so? I'd love to see you play again.

Hi Gary,

I saw you play with Dierks on the ACM awards this month. I thought it was one of the best performances of the night.

In another thread about that show, and awards shows in general, it was mentioned that most bands don't play live and record their track in a studio prior to the show.

Did you guys play live or was it a recording? Frankly, I couldn't really tell either way.
