Larry, I play the Day setup. That is the way I learned to play. I have moved some knee levers around and added moves over the years but the pedal have remained the same.

I have a compilation CD, and I think it is a Bob Wills cut, a texas standard,
where a Wills like voice introduces Jimmy Day on steel,
and then there is a killer jazzy psg solo.
Like Murph, harmonically, but quite different, less single note lines.
I had no idea JD ever played with BW. |

I had to watch the video instruction by utilising a mirror in front of the TV screen to get a better understanding of the ass-backwards pedal positions.
Unfortunately, this made the whole image look like a left-handed steel, and caused more confusion than was necessary, as I had to constantly flit from the TV screen to the reflected image, which ultimately caused a medical condition similar to what happens when spectating a tennis match.
Really???
No, not really |

My Emmons is Day set up,I acquired this guitar new in '84.
I got a ZB D10 about 18months ago and it is also Day set up on the E9 neck, which was a major factor when I bought it.
I have tried the Emmons set up only a few times and was quite confused but I guess it would'nt take long to perform the change.
I doubt if there is any advantage of one over the other although I wonder why most new guitars are Emmons set up,Perhaps someone will explain.
Best regards

I play a "Day" set-up and have since mid-60's. It just seem to work with my ankle anatomy well...and besides it's a great set-up.

Likewise. My first steel was set up this way and I'm too old to change now. But why would I want to, this setup does everything I need. My knee levers are a little unorthodox also, I just added them as I saw fit. This was way before the Forum and contact with other steel players.
The only downside I see to the Day pedal setup is learning from tab. Everything seems to be written for the Emmons setup. I've never used tab anyway, so it doesn't matter to me.
I saw a Jeff Newman video once and he was constantly having to tell the students not to watch his feet, because he used the Day pedal setup, and was teaching the Emmons setup.

I saw the same thing in a Lloyd Maines video.

I play the Day setup also. Learning from tab shouldn't be any harder. You just have to keep in mind that your pedals are reversed, or do what I did early in my learning process. I would just cross out (or white out) the pedal designations and change them to match my setup.

I play Emmons but I would guess by far most players around San Antonio play the Day set up. |
