I'm sitting here listening to Jeff Newman playing Mansion On The Hill and he was so smooth and a beautiful sound.I sit here and listen to it over and over. I'm trying to play it just like he did. It is so beautiful it makes you melt right in your seat.God Bless you Jeff Newman where ever you are you are the best.I hope to run into you again in the next world and you can teach me all you know.

It will soon be the one year anniversary of the tragedy that deprived the steel community of a very special person.
I hope to meet him somewhere, someday also. I would also like for him to teach me everything he knows, but, eternity may not be long enough in my case.
Rest well Mr. Newman
BTW Joey, the moderator handbook says that this should be moved to Steel Players.
Hey, I go by the book! [This message was edited by HowardR on 29 March 2005 at 06:48 PM.] |

It is hard to believe a year has almost passed since we lost Jeff Newman in such a tragic accident. Only the Lord knows how many steel players lives he had an impact on. I pray for Fran and the family as them anniversary comes around. It certainly will be difficult for them during this time. Lavelle, I know it is a dificult way to remember this since it happened on your birthday. The space shuttle exploded on my 26th birthday, January 28,1986 and that is the only reason I remember when it occured. |

Jeff Newman...... What a great person, what a great musician, what a loss.
I own and play that beautiful Marlen U12 that Jeff played in the movie "Living Proof". I can't look at that guitar without thinking of Jeff. I would think that Jeff,in some way, touched everyone in the steel guitar community.
Thanks for the memories, Jeff. |

I had the hornor and pleasure of meeting Jeff a few times and it was great. I even told him he looked and talked like Ross Parole and he laugh and said I wish I had his money. He and I joke around on that for a while.Great person and personality and there was only one Jeff Newman and I do not beleave anyone could replace what he has done with the Steel Guitar Community.God Bless you Jeff and Fran and your family. All of us steel players will join you as our time comes.

Very seldom does anyone leave this earth that can not be replaced. Jeff was a rare exception. He had the talent, knowledge, ability, patience, and drive, and enthusiasm to be the player/teacher/performer he was. A genius - yes; a character - yes. A friend I will never forget. I was fortunate enough to spend five sessions with him on "the hill" one on one. How precious those times were; thank goodness I recognized it even at that time. He was a rare person with rare talents. Most teachers do not have the drive, desire, and ability to communicate that he had. I almost become sick to my stomach as I think again about his passing. Not many days go by that I do not think of him. Truly a loss to the entire steel guitar world. Then again, how many left their knowledge on CD's, tapes, etc., so his work will continue to help us? With due respect to the current list of teachers, etc., they have their work cut out for them...(By the way Sam, thanks for starting this thread).. |

My very 1st steel seminar was one that Jeff gave in Pembroke, MA. There used to be a side steel club called "The Pembroke Pickin' Parlor".
Ed Steeves and John Macy were involved in this off-shoot of the PSGA.
This club set up one of the first Jeff Neuman
seminars. Jeff was playing the latest steel at the time - MARLEN. Man, he new his stuff.
The Pembroke Pickin' Parlour was a pretty up and moving venture.
They got the Big E to play in a hockey arena, once,
backed up by one of the better Boston bands at the time, "Wheatstraw", featuring Rocky Stone on lead guitar.
Buddy was insane. I was sitting about 5 rows back from the stage. The man was unblievable.......slanting the bar all over the place, for one.
And not just slanting, but, as far as I could see, he laid the bar out parrallel with strings in one passage - quick - very quick - we were all stunned.....and looked up after that move and gave everyone that classic Buddy grin - like - GEE, DID I JUST DO THAT?
