Yes, that is sad... but who can blame him!
Negative opinions about a style, or even a particular person's playing are one thing, but a few of the comments on these various RR threads are obviously full of personal resentment that he has had so much success, and verge on being hateful... That kind of mean-spirited self importance (with frequently no basis in actual facts) has kept more than one of the Nashville pros away from the forum in recent years as well, which is also a big loss. And that IS a fact, based on countless conversations...
Chuck is obviously bright, humble, and has a great sense of humor; that would also describe Robert Randolph, as anyone who's been around him knows. They would have SO much to offer here in terms of different perspectives, but if I were them I probably wouldn't bother to be a part of this either.

Bob , please close this thread. The whole point of my post has long been misunderstood and I CANT TAKE IT ANYMORE!   Gentle man it was about TONE! RR needs to use all those effects more tastefully so we can hear what the hell he's playing. I like Gospel steel but not noise, can I have an AMEN? |

Wow i wish i could get such a response about my playing as Robert has . Maybe if you heard me play you would tell me to play like Robert . Tone or bar control or effects ,it doesn't matter . Robert never said that he was playing ''Country Steel'' at any time . So i say if it works for him ( and it does ) Keep up the good work . let me ask this one thing . How many people do any of us draw out to hear us when we
play ? I don't hear anyone ! ( standing room only ) i don't think so . Just my little openion ,i hope that no harm done . Best regards ,,,Gary . |

I have played my share of hard rock gigs, and am not against a distorted tone.
David Gilmore's over driven tone on Pick Flyd slide stuff is killer.
Heck, I still like to hear Ozzie Osbornes Crazy Train form time to time...
I think RR pushes the amp a notch too hard, even in the blues rock world,
but then again he is coming up with a different sound.
And that really is the name of the game.
Big E tried things differently too, what was once radical sound is now old hat.
I find the Chuck Campell comments interesting. And wish we heard mor from him here. It is nice that Del Roy Grace has joined recently.
I was just listening to Dan Tyack's latest, and his isn't the standard steel tone, but it's a great steel tone.
The moment you reject some form of music..
you loose, not the person playing it.

and for YOUR life that is the slippery slope to not learning anymore.
When we are not learning anymore, we are that much closer to the end...

I'm watching RR on Austin City Limits as I'm writing this. I think he's starting to sell out a little bit. He's got a little taste of the bling bling and the pentatonic scale is taking over. He knows where his bread is buttered. I've heard his CDs before, and was not that impressed. I think Sonny Landreth can do a lot of this stuff on slide. It's the Family Band now, not just RR. I know that he's capable of playing mindblowing stuff, but I see more of a band thing than a steel thing. Also, he's all feeling rather than "pedal steel." He's trying to grab people, not impress steel players. But, being a steel player, just like the rest of you guys I get bored real fast with pentatonic licks.

I rarely comment on the RR thing, but I think I can be objective enough.
I liked the Family Band VERY much.
Robert is an integral part of it, and does them justice with his performance. Lots of energy in that young man.
I'll go see them if they ever got to town and I'm not gigging.

80 percent or more may be rejected.How do they keep there gig?? Could you if 80 percent of your playing was rejected?? Where I attend church.If members didn't like 80 percent of what you did.You be asked to step aside.
Don't get me wrong.I think Robert's whole deal is too cool.I hope to see others out front and center.I'm just very surprised by Mr.Campbells statment.
