Pics of Jimmie Crawford in Sweden, 1980

Post by Per Berner »

As a tribute to a unique player, I'd like to share these dusty pictures of Jimmie Crawford that I took at a steel seminar in Båstad, Sweden, in the summer of 1980. I was just out of my teens and had been playing my AWH Viking (just like a maple Maverick) for just over a year, and was totally amazed by what this awesome guy could do with all those levers and pedals. With Jimmie on stage is Danish steeler Nils Tuxen and a Swedish guitar player whose name I don't remeber.

A few other forum members were there as well, such as Egil Skjelnes from Norway and Henning Kock from Denmark (who got up on stage and played "Steel Guitar Rag" in F, which Jimmie thought was a strange and very amusing choice of key).

Thank you for sharing these Per. I don't think that there was ever anyone better than Jimmie; I was talking with him last week and he was still laughing at a cartoon that I had e-mailed him. I also told him that a couple of licks I had heard him do reminded me of Julian Tharpe; or did Julian remind me of Jimmie? This truly amazing man will be missed.

Bob C, music is music. It matters not which neck you play it on!

Wow! This brings back some memories. When I first moved to Gnashville, Jimmy was one of the first steelers I met (through Russ Hicks). I was fortunate enough to be asked to play on their first album together. The Big E was on bass....man, was I out of my league!

Anyway, Jimmie will be missed in a big way. He was....and I rarely use this word...a genius. May he rest in peace now.
