How Many Steel Dogs Out There?
Not meaning how good/bad you play but "Man's Best Friend?" do you have Laying around while you practice? My pup "Archie" follows me everywhere including my studio, I couldnt help post this after readin about that New York steeler getting a good gig with an over-friendly, smelly dog and terrible tunes but good pay! Btw, Archie like the steel except for them high notes which will set him off howling quicker than a 4 alarm fire..

All my dogs know is that when I sit at the steel I have metal things on my fingers that feel GREAT behind the ears. Every time I stop playing I get a dog head in my lap wanting s skritch with those finger picks...

This thread is cute and now I will admit to my very strange dachshund. When ever I haul out my harmonicas, my ever present buddy, "Beans" howls along to his heart's content.
About two weeks ago, I was practicing bar slides on my steel and low and behold, he started into howling. Needless to say, I don't think he understands the concept of chord work so he is broken heartedly relegated the basement while I practice.

I lost my faithfull studio pal last year. His name was Boxcar, weighed 225lbs. and was a Saint Bernard.
He ruined so many tracks by panting loudly or scratching. His excess of slobber has gummed up many a fader or pot. Anytime I tracked reeds(clarinet, sax, accordian) the timbre would drive him mad and make him howl, had to put him in the back yard for any dixieland sessions to say the least. In other words, a total pain in the butt!
BUT! At three in the morning when my wife is fast asleep, and Im stuck working on a mixdown, BoxCar was always there at my feet, keeping me company and making me laugh(silly dog!). I think of him and miss him every day he was truly THE BEST DOG!
PS
After he passed, I posted a tribute on the SGF and some amazing member(forgot his name) slyly asked me to email him a photo. I obliged, and about 10 days later I recieved a framed photo of him w/ the rainbow bridge poem(awesome if youve never read it, especially if youve lost a pet!). You people are truly the best.

My dog, Minnie was always at the foot of the guitar laying down whenever I played it at home. She was half Bassett Hound and half Cocker Spaniel but she really looked more like a small, black Bassett Hound. Cute as could be and a whole lot of fun with a super personality.
She lost her hearing (common to spaniels I'm told) when she was about 15 but continued to be next to the guitar when I played. I think she could feel it in the floor. She pretty much followed me everywhere. My wife joked that she (my wife) was our cat's human and I was Minnie's human.
Last August I had to have Minnie put to sleep. It was heartbreaking for me and I was holding her at the end. I still miss that dog so much. She was my buddy for 17 yrs., 11 months. I know she lived a long life but I sure miss her. I brought her home and buried her in the back yard. I couldn't just leave her there at the vet's after all those years.

I've got a 6-year old mongrel from the dogs' home. She sits in the chair every night looking depressed as she listens to me trying to work out whatever my latest tune-obsession is. But the second I put the bar down (even if I do it really quietly) she jumps out of the chair cos she knows its time for walkies

I had a little female mix ( I think poodle and terrier) Daisy for most of the 20 years she was around. She loved to go to gigs and went to most of them with me. On the way home at 2 am I would always stop and the AM PM mini mart and get her a "burger". She acted like the most appreciative kid you could even imagine. She died about 8 months ago. I can hardly remember when she wasn't around and she is really missed.
I have two standard Poodles who love to lay under the piano whenever my wife is playing. They love to lay under the piano whenever I am playing the steel. Since the piano and steel are in seperate parts of the house, that must say something about my playing.

Great posting my fellow steelers, I have to admit we (who are posting) are all dog lovers and wear our love for our animals on our sleeve as we rightly should. When I finish practicing and I lay my bar down and turn off the amp, "Archie" will run over and get real excited and try to jump up on my lap as if to see 'what that wonderful sound was'? Well sorta anyway, keep the stories comin and my condolences to those who lost their beloved pets, I lost "Sophie" (Rottweiler) who grew up with "Archie" and guess who the boss was, u guessed wrong it was the West Highland Terrier "Archie"..Go figure..

p.s. my dog really digs steel but likes long walks and rubbing his butt in circles..
