I'm moving down to New Zealand for a couple of years and am wondering if there are any steel players there. Are there any of you wacky kiwis here on the forum?

HI John, you will be most welcome here in NZ, only when you come please bring some warm weather with you. So far, this supposed Summer has not arrived. Where abouts will you be based? I am in Hamilton and Paddy Long is in Christchurch and Winnie Winston is in Wellington. There are a few others scattered through other parts of the country. Please feel free to e-mail me, I would like to know where you will be based....IP

I'll be in Dunedin, going to grad school (music composition). Though I have the luxury of not having to gig for a living there, I'd sure like to be able to. I'm shipping all my instruments (guitars, dobro, fiddle, mandolin, steel, etc) there, so maybe I can find some good players.
Will be in Christchurch for a couple of days, starting Feb. 3rd, then on down to Dunedin. Glad to know there are a handful of us there. |

Thanks, Ivan. By the way, what kind of problems amy I going to have with my Peavey Nashville 400 amp? I know I can get voltage converters, but is the 50 cycle thing an issue? I've got other gear that is coming down with me, though I've sold off most of my amps and other 110 volt devices.
Any other suggestions on what I should bring? Thanks.

John, using a 240-110volt stepdown transformer is no problem. I used one on a NV1000 that Paddy Long now has with no ill effects, just a little extra weight to carry.....IP

Hi John, As Ivan says, you won't have any issues with your amp, other than needing a stepdown transformer!! I have emailed you my phone number etc, Christchurch is only a few hours drive up the coast from Dunedin.

Thanks, guys. That's a relief. I was more worried about the 60 - vs. 50-cycle thing than I was about the voltage conversion. Lugging that big heavy amp halfway around the world, only to find that it hums badly, wasn't very appealing. [grin]
Oh, and thanks for the email, Paddy. I'll check in with you when I get to ChCH.
best,

and sort of on the way to Dunedin is Timaru, the abode of Red McKelvie-- another good steeler.
Dunedin does not have any steelers that I know of, but there IS a music store in town called "Twangtown" run by an ex-pat named Hiram Ballard.
Look him up. He know most of the musicians in town.
And, take a vacation and come up to Wellington some time to say hello.

I envy your trip John. NZ is, without any shred of doubt, probably my favorite destination other than Hawai'i. You will come across many steel guitarists in Kiwiland. If you are on the North Island, particularly Aukland, (which BTW is pronounced "Oakland"), be sure to touch base with the NEW ZEALAND HAWAIIAN STEEL GUITAR ASSOCIATION. They get together every first and third Sunday from 1:00pm to 4:30pm at "The Old Homestead" located at 92 Pt. Chevalier Rd, in Pt. Chevalier which is a suburb in the beautiful city of Aukland. They will really throw out the welcome mat for you!!! Give them a phone call when your flight sets down at the Aukland airport to let them know you are in NZ. (Ph. 09 570 7473) Try to contact Mac McKenzie, an excellent steel guitarist who is also a really fine gentleman. Feel free to mention my name if you desire. Hope this helps. Have a great trip ! |
