Today I just suddenly felt a strong need to record some bluegrass music with steel, and I chose "Foggy mountain breakdown" for my first try at the concept.
Here's the result (warning: includes banjo! ), if you'd like to hear...

Niklas, I'm been following all your clips, and you are consistently making huge leaps of progress every time. You are developing the classic package - speed on the fast numbers, finesse on the slow ones, tone and touch, and enough creativity to keep a listener on the edge of their seats. As I've said before, and especially in consideration of the ridiculously small amount of time you have been at it, I think you are on the road to greatness.

Thanks again! Jeff, those words are sure encouraging! I just enjoy steel playing the more I play, and I enjoy it more than anything right now! Even though I've played both guitar, banjo, mandolin and even saxophone - the steel is, (most of the time ), the only instrument with which I come up with and learn new things all the time, constantly. And your feedback means a lot to me when trying out new stuff!

Incredible. Most players don't reach that level of speed and dexterity EVER.You are obviously blessed with a very rare natural aptitude for steel thet very few people have. Wish I had it! I imagine you have a strong musical backround. I would have to agree with Jeff. If you keep progressing at the pace you already have, there is probably a good chance you can become one of a very elite group of steel players. The guys that the rest of us try to emulate. Innovators and engineers on the instrument. Keep working as hard as you already have and the sky is the limit with the talent you have. bob |

That was the best band in country/bluegrass

Niklas,
I have to ask you, how did you learn the positions, etc., to play in the style of this recording? It doesnt' sound like the kind of thing one would just come upon jamming around the house.
Anyway, it was as good as could possibly be, in my opinion. Right up there with the best.
Take care,
Les |

Niklas, I don't think it gets any better. Some people have that certain "talent"; a natural quickness to excellence, if you will. I could easily enjoy an evening of your music. Are you working any clubs over there? |

Not working any clubs yet. Actually, I mainly play at home, mostly doing my own recordings, or doing recording projects over the Internet and such...But I enjoy playing live as well, and I'll try to do it a little more in the future. But these bluegrass things would never work live I guess!
Gracias again!

That's super pickin!!! Great tone, great execution. I love the blocking lick at about 0:36-0:37. That's very advanced for someone who has been playing only 3 years. The rolls were right on the money too. Great! |

You guys just inspire me to play and record more and more! I'm currently working on two Bach pieces that I'm going to record sometime soon, and I'd sure be glad if you would listen to them and give feedback on them as well. Man, this a great place!

Niklas, you said something to the effect that you could never do this live. It is a fact that there is a prejudice in the bluegrass community against electric instruments. I understand this because they are trying to preserve the music in its original form. However, this style would work great as a showtune when doing a live show with a band.
I will never forget the one and only show I worked with Bill Monroe. The show opened with his band playing some classic country (Ray Price, etc). My steel playing fit right in. When Bill walked onto the stage, he looked at my steel guitar and said to me "You can lay out on my stuff". I never hit another lick (and rightfully so)............JD |
