Hey Dan,
I was playing at the Foothill when we hired Jerry Cole. He was only 4'11" tall and had what's known as "Short Man Syndrome". He didn't get along with a whole lot of people at all but for some unknown reason he and I clicked and became fairly good friends. He hired me to play steel on a couple of outside projects, one at Marineland of the Pacific for a private party for Norman Lear's production company. I think it was Tat & Tandem productions or something like that. The gig was full of famous TV stars who were in his shows. One of the best gigs I ever had. I think the reason we got along is that I also played lead guitar and we'd do some twin things and show stuff. I'm 6'4" tall so Jerry & I would do that thing like Joe Maphis and Larry Collins would do where I'd stand behind him and put my arms around him and play the bottom three strings on his guitar and he'd play the top three strings and we'd do some instrumental stuff on the same guitar. It was a lot of fun and kinda corny but the crowd loved that kinda crap. He and I always wore suits to the gig while the rest of the band dressed casual. Billy liked it a lot. Jerry's now the musical director for Nancy Sinatra last I heard. I talked to him on the phone about a year ago and he's doing OK. But although he was a 'bud and we got along well he's still a little @$$hole in my opinion but you can't deny his talent. He was an awesome vocalist and did a lot of Roy Orbison things with a tremendous range. I loved to play steel on that stuff.....JH
