NY state steel guys..

I wonder if I'm alone here in central NY state??? .. Any other guys within an hour or two of Ithaca/Syracuse/Binghamton??..

Maybe I'm just getting old and lonely,but it would be nice to share a few hours with a couple of other steel players one of these days.. You know,, set up the steels,trade ideas about tunings,copedants,steal each others best cheap licks..

I think a bunch of Jersey guys just did it ,don't know how it worked out. If a few of us are interested and within reasonable distance from each other[I have my doubts!] I think it would be a lot of fun sharing bad playing, a few laughs and a lot of war stories from the "road"..anyway. I'm always around if anyone thinks it might be fun..... bob

One of the best steel players in the world lives in Rochester New York: Chuck Campbell (check out www.campbellbrothers.com ). He plays at the House of God churck in Rush pretty much every Sunday that he isn't touring.

I'm in WNY.....Jamestown, to be exact. I enjoy the forum and would like to visit with any of you steelers out there. I have played steel since 11/46 and pretended to do it for a living (?) from 7/47 til 9/50 and never loved anything I have done since!, as much. I am now "retired" & wanting to get back to steelin' just for my own pleasure.......no one would pay me to do it, I'm sure.

We can certainly get together here in Candor,but I would have no problem driving out to where you and the other guys live. There are a few players around the Albany area. Randy Rollman and Rick Anderson are a couple names which come to mind.

As for me, I'm in the Mohawk Valley about half way between Albany and Utica. I was in your neck of the woods this past summer playing with Commander Cody.

I'm based in between Rochester and Buffalo.

But, my job has me traveling all over NYS. From Albany to Jamestown, Buffalo to Binghamton, Ithaca to Erie, Etc... I'm all over the place. Know route 90 very well.

Have met many steelers up and down Route 90, 17, 81 etc... Always willing to meet more.
There are actually more steelers in NY than you could imagine.

Hey Bob C, I think it's time for you to organize a NY state steel jam near you.....
you're sort of central....no one would have to travel over 200 miles or so! Get a club to open up for us.....maybe I could even get Bobbe to fly up next spring & we'll do it! He could show us all HT thumb pick!! No reason he should "hog" all them secrets! I'd even love to have him bring Doug Jernigan along. He's fast becoming a hero! He knocked me out in St Louis this year. Russ Hicks & Jimmy Crawford had Doug sit in on their set for a tune.....he smoked it! WOW! I think he must not keep his steel in the closet like I've been doing for way too long. New Year's resolution #1....play at least an hour set each day with my BIAB in 2005......I'll be 76 in Febrary and am now "retired"! But not from pickin'! Maybe John DeMaille can fix us up to be a western branch of the CT show each year.....My ancestor's came from CT in 1836 to western NY, but that's still no reason CT pickers should have all the fun!!

Doug.. Yikes..As far as my organizational skills are concerned... well actually I HAVE no organizational skills to be concerned about. I don't have the motivation or energy to be the guiding force behind a gathering the size you are envisioning!

I was thinking more along the lines of 3 or 4[well,,maybe 5!!]guys setting thier steels up in someones living room ,den, rec room, etc. and just sharing licks,tunings copedents,amp settings,effect,hand.foot,vibrato techniques,getting to appreciate the differences AND similarities in our approach to playing the steel,the more experienced sharing a few tricks with the less, that kind of stuff... then hitting the local McDonalds for a quick bite,shaking hands and saying "lets do this again real soon"... thats kind of what I had in mind.... bob

My great friend, Paul Razmann, was the bass player/vocalist in the first "hillbilly" band
I joined in July of 1947 right after my graduation from Chautauqua Central School. He was my room-mate @ 318 W Church St in Corry PA, where we paid $3.50 each for our weekly room rent.....& we slept together.....it was alright in those days.....for two guys to sleep together! Paul taught school in Candor after graduating
from Mansfield & doing his service hitch. I visited him right after Halloween, this year, in Brooktondale where he lives with his wife, Beth. Paul has a Martin flat-top that once belonged to Jack Dunnigan, a member of Clayton McMitchen's Georgia Wildcat's back before pedal steels even existed. Jack & Hoyt "Slim" Bryant (played on early Victor recordings with Jimmy Rogers, the singing brakeman) are pictured in the Nashville TN Country Music Hall of Fame exibit of the McMitchen group! I will come to your small sit down session, but I still think we need to consider one, maybe as a fund raiser, with Scotty involved, on a much larger scale! Let's help NY become known as a steel guitar state! After all I just learned that Chuck Campbell resides & picks in Rochester NY! Let's all you guys join in! Come on!

I know I'm kinda sticking my nose in here, but Lord willing, plans are firming up for a Jamestown vist in August of 05. The wife and I, born and raised in Busti feel the need to touch base with our family, friends and roots.

It would be great if there is some music happening at that time.

I'll keep in touch with Doug and Joe by email as it gets closer.
