Hi Ricky. I have to share a story with you. I was in Austin last May for the first and only time there. I was attending a conference for my real job. On Wednesday or Thursday of the week we finally found the Broken Spoke. Not many folks there but we sat down to listen to the band. They blew me away. I approaced the lead guitar player on break and told him I was a steel player from Montana.

He said "where abouts?" I told him Great Falls and he proceeded to name every beer joint in town that had live music. It seems he played there in the 70's. Also named several pickers that are still around. His name was Redd Volkaert.

I told him that I was disappointed because they had no steel player and I wanted to hear some of the best in Texas. He said come to a club the next night. I forget the name of the club but he said that it was quite a ways from downtown Austin. He said that he would be playing with one of the best and I would really enjoy it.

Since we had to take a taxi everywhere we did not make it. I sure wish we would have.

Tell Redd "hi" for me. I have shared that story with many of the pickers around here. It really is a small world and it just got smaller thanks to the Forum.
