Just another 2 cents, but if you were to take RR out of the band, and sub in a good blues player, you'd have the same end result. His backup players are where that groove is coming from. The guy on the Hammond is doing all the right stuff. Not hard stuff by any means, just the RIGHT stuff. The same goes for the Drummer and Bassist. This is not to say the Robert isnt a good player. He also, knows the *right* stuff, and uses it to his advantage.
This is the difference between a good band, and a great band.
I've got the studio CD, and the Live CD, and for all of you that have heard both, the live CD is FAR superior to the studio tracks, would you not agree?
Again, just my 2 cents. maybe only worth a penny.

Lynn K. You are right, RR can do well on a 6 or 8 string. He has a Harmos lap steel, & did play it in his stage show over the past couple of years.(See the Harmos web site for pictures) He hasn't seemed to play the lap much in the past few months during all the opening jobs for Eric Clapton. He must be consentrating on the PSG. I wish he would start playing lap in concert again.
RR is in NC tonight & i'm going to the show.

Why is it that every RR thread that starts out positive must draw the negative individuals in to post their thoughts?

You can't tell me that every single steel player on this Forum has nothing but admiration for every pro steel player BESIDES RR.....yet it's only RR's name that gets people on these positive threads wanting to spout negativity.

There are steel players that I don't care much for....including one or two that really would surprise most of you. But what purpose would it serve to spout of on someone else's praise post of a steeler that I might not care for? All it would accomplish is to anger the initial poster for hijacking the thread, hurt the feelings of the steel player who was initially being praised, and insult the fans of that steeler.

Yes, we have the freedom to speak our minds....but what about common courtesy and showing respect to the others on this forum?

Joe, you're absolutely right. Can you imagine someone posting a thread saying that they just came back from hearing John Hughey/Buddy Emmons/Herby Wallace/Doug Jernigan or any other "mainstream" steel player and loved every minute of it. Then a bunch of people pile into their thread and say, "Oh well, whatever floats your boat, man. That's not my cup of tea." ?? Can you spell R.U.D.E.? Just because you have a "right" to say it doesn't mean that you should abandon common courtesy. You also have a right to remain silent.

I watched that special twice. It is true that RR plays his psg almost like a pedal-free guitar. Much of what he plays could easily be played on a stringmaster, but it's not true that he doesn't use the pedals. I definitely heard him use pedals on some of his faster blues licks. He also uses a shubb pierce type bar. All the sacred steel players use bars that are easy to pick up and put down again in another place.

Tommy and I heard Dante Harmon play at The House of God church last night (near Atlanta). Dante is a great player, minister of music at three churches, and generous mentor to the young people in the church. His lovely wife, Stephanie commented how pleased they were with their GaSGA membership, that they would never be asked to compromise who they are and what they stand for. Those of you coming to the next Georgia Peach Jam (Sunday, November 28) will get to hear some Sacred Steel - and it IS A TREAT!!!

Someone wanted to know his tuning. According to the article in Guitar Player magazine it's as follows low to high:

B E G# B E E G# B D E G# D# F#.

It's basically the same as a regular E9/B6 Universal with a D note on string 5. Also it has those two E strings right in the middle which when asked about, Robert stated the reason was that he could make them go in different directions with the pedals. The article didn't show what his pedal changes were though. I watched the ACL show also and I don't remember seeing him using any of the pedals either. Also, I'd like to hear him play something with a clean tone to see what he can do with that...Have a good 'un..JH
