Jerry Garcia video - "The Wheel" w/ Jerry on PSG
This is a video of the song "The Wheel" by Jerry Garcia, with Jerry playing every instrument except drums.
Lots of steel on this one!

Worked fine here, on WinXP. Nice video, I've never really listened that much to the Grateful Dead or Garcia, so thanks for the link.

Pete,
Thanks ! It works fine for me on my mac. Video and all. Is that the same steel playing that is used as a bumper on the Al Franken show ? Garcia's playing is always so musical and expressive.

Love it..
"You can't let go, and you can't hold on.."
While I think about it, the people that have problems with JG's playing, if they're players, run a risk of dissing his style, technique, or whatever.
It's like Pavarotti and his arch rival calling eachother "hacks". It's lost on people that Like his Music. They start looking pretty small.. Even players that might notice some of the little slips and "nuances".
There was GREAT show on the IFC about JG's "bluegrass years" with interviews from Vassar Clements, Grisman, and others.
JG cut more stuff than 90% of his "detractors".
With the exception of some of the endlessly rambling live stuff they play on KBOO (and I admit, I listen to), I like it a lot better than some of the more "polished stuff".
But then, that's just me..

Always loved that song and the steel within."Small wheel turn by the fire and rod,big wheel turn by the grace of God,every time that wheel turn round, bound to cover just a little more ground'. Great lyrics. Sounds like a description of the workings of the rods, bellcranks and changer fingers on our steel guitars no??,,,I adore this cat's playing.. always have. He took his somewhat limited mastery and technicality on pedal steel guitar and somehow turned it into an advantage musically. Those half missed single notes in the midst of that sea of echo drenched legato passages in "The Wheel" make the tune for me.. Hey I still play that way!!. Half hit staccato notes in the middle of a giant pool of echo.. I made a living at it!..Jerry was no Buddy,Paul,Lloyd,Curly, etc, but the guy was a musicians musician. His steel wasn't technical, but it was sweet sounding for certain. Thanks Jerry ..you'll never know this but you, Rusty,Pete,Buddy C,Tom B and a select few others taught me to play.... long ago... bob<FONT SIZE=1 COLOR="#8e236b"><p align=CENTER>[This message was edited by Bob Carlucci on 03 October 2004 at 05:00 PM.]</p></FONT>

Great clip, Pete. He was one of a kind, that's for sure. Hope this thread doesn't start a long rant...life's too short.
I happened to see the David Nelson Band do a killer version of that song here in Portland. Barry Sless was on his S-10, and the band absolutely nailed it...best version of the song I ever heard.
