I am pretty sure that was Jim Vest if I remember correctly.

Didn't Jim tune the 10th string to A with the pedals down on that song?

Tony, Jim did tune the 10th string down to F#. When it is tuned to F#, the A pedal will pull it up to close to perfect A without retuning the changer. You can just about do that on the fly and it does give that low drawling sound. I use it sometimes when I think about it on some of Vern Gosden songs.

Yes Jim would just drop the 10th string down to the A note with the "a" pedal down and then when you let it off; it will naturally; because of the now different tension on the string with the travel that is set for it's regular pull; will go down to an F# note(a tone and a half) and that F# note is the 3rd tone in D which in the open position is a nice move in D with that 10th string moving from the 3rd tone up to the A note 5th tone.....yeeee haaa

I heard Mike Sweeney do that, in a club on Broadway, Nashville, last month. He sounded just great all afternoon and night. Definitely hear him if you can.

Thanks Dean. I also get to do that 'trick' with Vern Gosden every now and then. Just two days ago in Mo.was the last time. Jim Vest also used that dropped tuning for "This Ain't My First Rodeo" by Vern and "Slide Off Your Satin Sheets" by Paycheck and it's hard to tell what else.
Mention should be made that Jimmie Crawford was doing the same thing long before those records came out. Just listen to "New Joe Clarke" from about 1975.

I play E9 but, I like to figure C6 type licks/tunes. I tune the 10th to F# and the 9th to C#(A6 tuning) and play "Hold IT" in A and by releasing the A pedal, it works like pedal 8 on the C6. (C to A) Crawford and
Vest are brilliant.
