That Johnny Cox is a great steel guitarist is no secret to anyone here in Forumland, but those who haven't seen him perform at steel shows might not know that he's as good a bassist, IMHO, as he is a steeler.

Johnny's filled in for me several times on steel with the Bandoleros, but Bush was lacking a bass player this weekend and JC came down to the Lubbock area to fill in on bass Saturday night. Needless to say, he did a fantastic job and made the band sound like he'd been doing the gig for years. As an added bonus, he brought Joan along and we had a great visit.

Of course, Joan has been a good buddy of mine for as long as I've been doing steel shows, so their coming on the gig made a great time even better.

These two are not only wonderful musicians, they're wonderful people, and I'm honored by their friendship as well as their music.

Ah shades of the old HOF lounge in Nashburg when Johnny would play Bass, some Guitar and Curleys steel. There was another young striving Bass player who sat in once in a while too I forget his name I think it began with "E".

I've been tellin' this to my steel pals for years. The one secret little bit of arcane wisdom that I can pass along to all steel players is to learn to play the bass! Don't tell anybody.

Herb..it was good to see you too. You guys all sounded great at the gig. I enjoyed the oppportunity to visit with you there. I liked getting to sit back and watch and hear you on the stage. It made for a fun evening for me. Johnny had a ball playing too!

Herb, I don't have the words to describe how great it was to work with you, Johnny and the rest of the Bandoleros. Johnny sang great and the band was on top of it's game. Most importantly, you all made me feel like I had been in the band for years. That makes so much difference. I hope I can do it again very soon.
