Corky Owens & the "Farewell Party Band"

Post by RON PRESTON »

Folks,
I'll keep it as short as I can, but, it's REAL HARD after hearing Corky Owens and The "Farewell Party Band" & Meeting such Wonderful Guys & Gals AND Gene Watson this past Saturday night at "Ropers" in Bossier City, LA. It was an Honor, My Friend.
Corky, THANK YOU for such a GREAT PERFORMANCE and for taking the time, (Like 2 HOURS) to Chat with me and "Sharing" what YOUR MENTOR (AND Mine) has TAUGHT YOU about HOW to Achive "THAT TONE"....YOU GOT IT, Man, NO DOUBT! Top Notch advice Mr.Tommy White has given you. Tommy, as ALWAYS, YOU Da MAN! Image Talk about TONE To the BONE. Image Guys, Corkys TONE on his CARTER was like Out of this world. Well, If any of you Folks out there have EVER had the Honor of hearing these Guys, then you KNOW what I mean. WOW!
I haven't heard "THAT" TONE in SOME TIME.
BTW, THANK YOU, Corky for allowing me to use your Session 400 LTD & your Pro-Fex II during our Act. God Bless you. Not too many would do that. Just wanted to say also that You sure Put a Tear in MY 'Ol "GLASS EYE" while standing there watcing you. Tell Mr. Watson & the Band THANKS for signing my Telecaster too. Hope Your Wonderful Lady Can use the "Gift" I gave her. Hope to see you down the Road again someday. Image

Corky is not only one super steel player with a smooth touch on the steel, but he has fast become one of my dearest friends. He lives about 10 minutes away and we try to get together at my house once a week just to pick and grin. One of the nicest people you will ever meet!

Eddie, Tommy suggested to Corky some of the "Little Secrets" that these "Masters" have spent YEARS obtaining through "Trial & Error" to Get "THAT" tone we all strive to obtain ourselves. BUT, just remember, Just because SOME who might have (I'm Paraphrasing here) $10,000 in EFFECTS, $5,000 in AMPS & $6,000+ in a "Top-of-the Line" STEEL, that does NOT Nessesarlly mean your going to have/get "THAT" Tone like the "Masters." TONE is in BOTH the RIGHT & LEFT HAND as WELL, as is with ones' TOUCH & TECHNIC with a COMBINATION of MANY otherTHINGS ALL TOGETHER.....Just ask Corky what his "Secret" is to HIS PERSONAL TONE on his CARTER. He can explain MUCH BETTER than I can. PERSONALLY, I have been in the past very "BIASED" on MY THOUGHTS & OPINIONS about CARTER, and LORD, am I SORRY NOW, And I HUMBLY ask the Folks at CARTER for their Forgivness due to my "TUNNEL VISION," for I have been DEAD WRONG ........What I HEARD in IMHO when Corky Played, was VERY MUCH INDEED like a "1966" P/P "WRAPAROUND, FATBACK, or CUT TAIL"......Only it was a CARTER played by a Person who KNEW HOW to "ROPE & TAME" "THAT" Tone that was ALREADY IN that CARTER STEEL ALL ALONG.
So does MANY OTHER Steels as well, But, only a VERY FEW has the "KEY" to "UNLOCK" that TONE that's HIDING INSIDE....As my Dear Ol Mom always said:..
"SOME people LIVE & LEARN....And SOME people just LIVE" I HOPE I have the ability to "STEEL LEARN"... Image
[This message was edited by RON PRESTON on 16 September 2004 at 06:21 AM.]

Corky and Tommy are both top notch in my book! Super nice guys and "very" skilled musicians. Only problem I had listening to Corky was the sound guy didn't have him nearly loud enough through the system. That playing needs to be heard!

I finally got to hear Corky live, and to meet him last Saturday. I was highly impressed with the way he played Gene Watson's show. He played tastefully, with great tone, and very in tune. He and the guitarist, Woody Woodruff played parts great together. Corky, You really play great!

So, specifically, what are these things that Tommy White explained. Please be more specific than just saying it's in the hands. I'm sure I speak for everyone when I say we would LOVE to hear a few pointers said by Tommy White on how to achieve the greatest tone we are capable of. Thank you very, very much in advance.

Jeff,
Corky installed the "TOMMY WHITE" Pickup on his S-10 Carter. For the LIFE of ME, I can NOT REMEMBER the OHMS he had it wound to though. Tommy and Corky get together when Corky "Rolls" into "GNASBURG" from time to time.

Hey, Bob. It was great getting to work with you. Thanks for the kind words. I hope you don't mind, but i barrowed a couple of licks from you. Wayne, thank you so much. You guy's make me feel all mushy inside. Jeff, there is a thread that covers this very well. Better than i could and by some great players. Thanks again guy's.
