Interesting post. I never counted all the chords in the old songs we played. But I think Duke Ellingon"s "Sophisticated Lady" moves through a lot of chords. I still play it once in awhile and it keeps me busy....al Image Image

One I really like is "Do You know what it means to miss New Olreans". Never counted the chords, didn't want to scare myself. I just like the way these chords go together. Jim

Don't forget Chelsea Bridge (Strayhorn) - sounds nice on steel. For those who enjoy standard tune changes, here is a very generous site, listing hundreds of tunes/changes - and very helpful for use with BIAB: http://www.ralphpatt.com/Song.html#c

"What A Wonderful World" has a few, I had to play that on dobro at a wedding recently, and solo over a verse... Not too easy, but man what a beautiful piece of music. I felt honored just to be playing it. Calling "all the things you are" "all the chords you know" practically had me on the floor. Too funny. Cool thread, must get me one of theme fake books and figure some of these songs out.

"Statue of a Fool," doesn't have THAT many chords, but since the song doesn't really have a verse/chorus franework, it's tricky (at least for me). But then, "The Beat Goes On."

More chords? more pedals? more knee levers? OK I'll buy that "BUT" my good friends whom I have known since they were teenagers and had to paint eyebrow pencil on their faces in form of a mustache and side burns to make them look older. Image
because they were underage to perform in clubs did what no one has ever done before and I doubt in my lifetime will never happen again.

While I was looking for augmented 11 ths and flatted 9ths,,,these two young boys put the steel guitar where it has never been before. And all with 3 to 4 chords. I knew the moment I heard them in a club with myself and Cucci we would visit between sets I felt that they were on to something. It wasn't only the bright single string melody on steel guitar or the rhythm of his brother or the back beat of their uncles drum beat,,what I saw was what Johnny Cucci didnt see, and that was the young kids dancing to the music and swaying in a dreamy kind of way as they played an unknown tune.

Sleepwalk and all with four chords. It makes me proud to realize that I knew somehow someway these young kids were on to something.

I am proud as the devil to have been there during these times and that I had a part in getting Santo his first Fender guitar.

More Chords?? Im not sure anymore. Simplicity and tasty playing is where its at. And they are members of the Steel Guitar Hall of Fame and many other awards too numerous to mention.

Sure I realize I played poorly at the ISGC but it made mne proud that Jonny Farina acknowledged his old buddy.

Thank You Johnny, you did me proud.

Buddy doing multiple transpositions of a good sized tune would have a lot of chords for sure,
but I don't think that counts. Unless
you say most chords in a currently recorded song.

Now if we all pass around a 12 key version of Lush Life and all add a solo, that would certainly be the biggest chord structure on the planet.

And around 30 minutes long too.

What would be even hipper would be not to just do a 1/2 step transposition, but do it from a circle of 5ths with maybe a cool passing chord at the transposition point.
