This is actually a pretty civil thread on Garcia. Most of the posters are fans-the real vitriol has been shifted to RR, who is the latest high profile steeler to have the audacity to be more famous than Emmons. But that's another thread...
This is all pretty harmless-just folks gabbing about Jerry. Some tongues pretty firmly in cheek.

Well, Robert Randolph is technically a much better steel player than Jerry Garcia ever was. RR is a steel player who dabbles in guitar a little bit. JG was a guitarist who dabbled in steel for a short time during his long career.you never seem to see any of those people who come on with guns blazing, tongues lashing, and fingers flying at the mention of anything remotely negative in regard to RR do the same for JG.
I doubt that Jerry would disagree with many of the disparaging comments about his steel playing. He knew he wasn't very good at it. His saving grace was his consummate musicianship, which shown through on any instrument he touched (even, I've been told, on the b@n&o!).

I'm not saying that I agree or disagree, but it seems to me that people who made that sort of statement about [fill in name here] being a better steel player than Robert Randolf in past threads were severely brow-beaten.
[This message was edited by Tom Olson on 02 September 2004 at 03:46 PM.]
Robert Randolph is technically a much better steel player than Jerry Garcia ever was

I liked JG because he played MUSICALLY. He had IMO a neat style that was very snappy and percussive. It wasn't very developed technically, but individuality is hard to achieve for most of us. Many players on this forum could blow him away on the steel, but how many could have come up with a better signature riff? I love Teach, the song, and as a beginner on steel, I'm having a blast playing along with Teach and other New Riders, Poco,CSNY stuff. So what if his ability was limited? Kevin H. you ought to be shot for stirrin it up! Are you coming to St. Louis this weekend? See you all there. JimP

Can I be # 38 Jim? Thanks. Unfortunately I have to play. Were opening for a couple of Nashville acts and its the end of a very busy summer season. I would have liked to meet you.
I got a chance to see Jerry Garcia play pedal steel guitar twice with the New Riders . He actually used a lunch room chair when I saw him play. Very, very unique. Whatever instrument Garcia picked up turned into that Garcia magic. He had that west coast staccato thing happening. Looking back I consider seeing him play a real experience.
Maybe Pete Grant could come on and shed some light on his copedant and coil tap choice.
[This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 02 September 2004 at 06:15 PM.]

[This message was edited by Kevin Hatton on 02 September 2004 at 06:16 PM.]

Kevin no never did see him but I heard him and wasn't to impressed. INMHO a steel player is more then someone who slides the bar up and down the strings to make ungodly noise. I don't say he shouldn't impress you or anyone else My thoughts of steel players are people like Emmons, Green, Franklin, White, to name only a few now these fellows don't make just noise Sorry if I mess in your corn flakes.

Obviously, technique on your instrument is important to acheive the sounds you want to acheive. I spent years and years practicing scales on the ol' 6 string just to get my chops up. But I'd trade all the chops in the world for melody and phrasing. I thank Jerry for sharing his melodies with us all.
Back to the topic...did Garcia ever touch the C6 neck? Were there steel players that he idolized?
