and although we should all branch out and stretch with our styles and executions, but no way would I ever agree that our beloved Instrument is a thing of the past.Quite the contrary.
Just take a listen to almost any new Country tune on the radio or charts..or any of the top tunes in the past several years..
The other day I turned on the CMT video channel for a few minutes for an afternoon Siesta and it was very apparant to me that each of the 6 or 7 videos of the new tunes I watched were filled with very fine Steel playing, even Keith Urbans new tune..
and if ya don't believe me, take it from Joe Nichols new CD with Terry Crisp..now there's a fella thats playing some stuff ! Also playing Steel on this CD is John Hughey and Stuart Duncan. There's some pretty good stuff workin' here...
Just because the crossover artists are shying away from Steel on the crossover versions of there tunes means nothing.This has always been the case.
Is Steel an Instrument most related to Country Music ? Yes, of course, it always has been. Is the Fiddle more associated with Bluegrass ? Is it dead ?
This past week we have been recording a short 5 song band DEMO which covers Brad, Alan,Ricky Skaggs, Vince and even SRV.. Three of the selected tunes are very current TODAYS COUNTRY and require that I play em' just like or pretty close to the records which led me to thinking that if the Steel is so dead why do all of these newer recent tunes have such eleborate Steel parts which if were missing from the song would leave a huge hole..
Go out and get Joe Nichols CD with Terry Crisp..if some of this playing doesn't bring home the bacon for ya' then it may be too late for you.
If one feels inclined to add a style from another genre such as "sliding blues" I say yes go for it, but don't leave out the "Roots" because it's the "Roots" that will survive the decades and the test of time. It always does.

Joe Nichols was on the Opry Sat night and Sang Farewell Party, Terry Crisp did the turnarround and in it modulated up one tone and continued a great ride. Super Picker. Joe said just at the end of it "Ain't That Something!"  Good to see Artists showing appreciation for their pickers.

It's definitely NOT dead here in Texas. LOTS of good steeling going on all over the state. IF you go catch the top acts around Texas, most all of the bands will have a steel player. I bounce back and forth from steel to my strat. Seems like a lot of guys do that down here.

Well, if the thing is dead, they forgot to tell the Texas people. We stack 'em in every Friday and Saturday night to SRO, and we play it all, new country, classic rock, blues, and swing. (One might have to change the e9 and c6 tuning to get it all as I did, but I know several players that can "git it" on both necks.) It happens in the Ft Worth, Dallas, and believe you me, it certainly happens in the Hill Country around Austin, San Antonio, Houston and along the Gulf Coast.
What's more, there are more than a couple of builders in this state, including MSA, Remington, Rains, Wells, Carter, GFI, and probably a lot more that I'm not aware, who are running full time and have waiting lists of people to buy them.
That's just here, only the Great One could probably put together a list of all others including Emmons, Excel, BMI, GFI amongst them. If it's dead, please don't tell the people here, it would just upset them more than the Iraqi Situation.
Betcha' Bobbe S. is certainly happy with his business, and Tony you started a hell of a good thread. No doomsayers on this end you can bet on it!!

| I have never heard more steel guitar at any time in my life...and that has been a long, long time. And it has never been any better..we still got Lloyd, Paul, Tommy, John, and a host of other great pickers on records every day...Besides that there are steel players all over the place. Our association (MASGA) has over 300 players just in our area!! And beginners are coming out of the wall. |

I noted in another thread that during a week in the Boston area,
I heard steel as much as fiddle all week long.
It had a solid place in many of the tunes, and many good rides, even in thepop length tunes where space is a premium.

| I don't know what kind of CD sales volume b0b pumps out of his site, but I certainly would never have heard of people like Gary Brandin, David Phillips, Dave Easley or Mike Perlowin if it hadn't been for here. It would probably be hard to assess how many people are hearing steel guitar now as compared to 40 years ago, but the internet in general and b0b's work in particular has certainly broadened my access to a wider variety of steel music. |
