Mike,
Is there any chance that you could recall your C6 set-up from the 'Dreams Of India' days? There's an interesting 'pull' in there somewhere, and your help would be much appreciated!

Hey Rog,
That's been awhile ago (what...almost 30-years?), but I think the only difference since then (not counting some experiments that didn't work) is that I was using the high G note on the 1st string then (I'm now using the D like most everyone else).
Floor peds are pretty basic Emmons-like setup. On the knees, this is what I've got;
.......LKL UP LKR RKL RKR
1. D
2. E.................Eb/D....................
3. C..........D..........................B...
4. A...........................Bb............
5. G...F.....................................
6. E.................../F....................
7. C
8. A...........................Bb............
9. F
10.C
The only other pedal I would call non-standard is my 4th floor pedal (1st on the C6th). The normal change is raising the two A's to B. I never got much out of that. One of the experiments that worked was keeping the 4th string A to B change but loosing the 8th string raise and raising the 7th string C to D. I'm lost without this pedal. I can't remember if I had this one then or not though (?).
By the way, I'm using 9 floors, but the 8th pedal has been my experiment all these years. Still haven't found what I'm looking for. I should probably simplify everything I have in favor of less pedals and changes.
Hope this helps,
Mike[This message was edited by Miguel e Smith on 19 July 2004 at 10:13 AM.] |

I believe you did have the 4th pedal change you mentioned above, because we discussed it when I was at your house in the late 70's. I know you had it on your first ZumSteel, but don't know if it was on your push/pull. 'Jesus Loves Me' was the tune in question and Roger and I were discussing how great that arrangement is a couple of weeks ago. Hope things are well in Phoenix and the fires didn't get too close. We've had some of the same here in south Florida, as Roger will attest to.
Roger - CU tomorrow.

Many thanks, Mike - that's very interesting, especially your two options for getting the 'F' note. The other thing that really interests me is getting a 'D' in the middle, and your method is well worth some thought. That C to D on the 3rd sounds good, too!
I have BE's knee set-up - the only pull of his that hasn't been of much use (to me, at least) is the As to Ab - I may well substitute one of your pulls for this one.
So many options, and so little time! What a joy this instrument is, to be sure....
Thanks for your quick and informative response.
Larry - see you tomorrow; time for me to visit YOUR guitars!
Roger
A 'PS' - I still think that Mike's 'Jesus Loves Me' is one of the most musical and thought-provoking steel guitar recordings ever!

Mike, i've been tryin' to figure out what your P4 does, since i kept it on the Zum
so far i use it in conjunction w: P8 so i get sus4 on string 7 and a 9 on string 4
Jim Loessberg got to use my Zum when he was in France 3 weeks ago - i had him over at the hotel so he could check out the steel before the gig - i asked him what does one use that P4 for - he had no trouble makin' sense on it, but for the life of me,i can't remember those hip chords he played on it.
guess i'll have to go to Austin and look him up....

You know, I need to get some of those memory herbs or roots I've heard about. If I'd already have been taken that stuff maybe I could remember the names, but...
Crowbear, Jim was playing with a local Phoenix area singer named Pat James. The drummer who did that gig was Matt Goodman and I work with him weekly (well, except for the time he was gone). I heard some good stories about the trip and maybe one of these days I can get over that way myself. The closest I've been in years was at Paris in Las Vegas a few weeks ago.

P.S. Larry,
I did a gig in Payson, AZ on July 4th in a park and the whole gig we were being rained down upon by ash. As we drove back that night, we could see the flames in dozen of spots all near the highway...kinda spooky. At least we haven't had one of those 460,000 acre jobs like we did awhile back. It's hot enough out here without all that stuff anyhow.

I own the guitar Mike recorded "Dreams of India" on. I bought it from TC Furlong in 1978 or 79, and it did not have that 4th pedal change at that time, maybe Tommy took it off. I would LOVE to see "Jesus Loves Me" Tabbed out like it is on that album, and I still use a G on the first string, which Mike once indicated to me is used on that tune. |

Hi Mike...yes, "Jesus Loves Me" is one of my all time favorite steel guitar moments. That's where I was always hoping that the steel was heading ever since the first time I heard it.
It's funny just how similar some of our KL's are. Also your pedal 4. Have you ever tried lowering your low F to D with your "experimental" pedal 8? Is it between the trad. pedals 7 & and the boo wah? After seeing this thread I'm really curious now.

Seems like a few folks asked about tab for "Jesus Loves Me" several times and I don't recall ever doing one. Tom Bradshaw sent me back some remaining tabs and courses I did from a long time back and that wasn't in there, so...I don't think it exists. I've long since forgotten how to play it myself.
Rick, I've not tried that particular experiment change. Most of my (limited) efforts were always based around doing something in the range of strings 6, 7 or 8. That seems to be the area that I bogg down most often in.
