Thursday evening I sat down to watch the Wilburn Brothers on RFD TV. To my surprise there was no Hall Rugg but Curly Chalker was the steel player. He played some great country and an instrumental on the C6th neck. I always thought Hee Haw never really showcased the talent he had. He was a great steel guitarist and that C6th tune was fantastic. He was playing a MSA with the C6th on the front neck and the E9th on the back neck. There was a lead guitar instead of Buddy Spicher on fiddle as well but I did not recognize him. My regret is that I did not buy more of Curly Chalkers projects while he was living. He was a tremendous player and I know he is missed greatly by the steel guitar community. |

Has anyone thought of doing a video of Curly's performances on different shows? I suppose this could work for different performers that we admire. There might probably be different legalese mechanics involved in such productions; I don't know but it's a thought. |

I have been playing "at" steel guitar for 10 years and began hearing Curly's name about that time. This morning I watched my tape of last night's Wilburn Brothers show and was surprised to see him for the first time. I'm sure I saw him on Hee Haw when I was a kid, but that doesn't count. Monster player, this Mr. Chalker. (But didn't you just love that "lip-synced" solo during the woman's second song!) I sure missed Hal Rugg and Buddy Spicher, but sure enjoyed Curly. |

Walter, I feel bad for you because these country music shows are great. I was very young and hardly remember them much less the music. I do not know if you can get a dish but I have Dish Network and I see them on the RFD channel. I have sent them an email asking for some more of those older shows. I guess we will see what happens. |
