Well, it would probably take at least a few hundred words, but I'll try and keep it short.
It's about his sound with that push pull Emmons guitar he has along with the Music Man amp head, and the two custom speaker cabinets that Duane Marrs made with two Emmenence 12" speakers (one in each cabinet).
I don't think Randy had any "outside" processors of any kind. Maybe a stomp box of some kind, I'm not sure.
Folks, it was probably one of the very best, if not the very best, sounds I have ever heard coming from a steel guitar/amp combo.
I'm sure that the biggest reason was Randy himself, but, with both Randy and that combination of equipment, it was just unbelievable to my ears.
Way, way super good Randy. Keep it up big boy and you might find it yet. !

I am pretty sure Judy has something to do with the combination too!
Tommy and I had dinner with Jim Cohen last night (THANK YOU, JIM!!)and were discussing their favorites. With all the greats they could have chosen, surprisingly they named the SAME top two - Randy was at the top of both.
He's a REAL gentleman, too!
The World loves you, Randy!! |

I came back from Chattanooga a total 'convert'! After posting my enthusiastic review of his great performance, I was happy to hear from Granny Beavers - what a lovely surprise!
I have to report that his CD has been at the top of my personal 'chart' ever since I got back, and I'm currently working on 'Body and Soul' on E9th.
Randy is a National treasure, even if most of the Nation doesn't yet realise it!
Total and complete musicianship - thanks, Randy!!!

I need to correct something I got a little wrong.
The speakers are 15" Electrovoice. And, he did use a Boss RV-3 processor.
One more note,,,I have also heard Randy's Zum through this rig and it is just as awsome as the Emmons push pull.

I don't know that I deserve this recognition, but I do thank each and every one of you for your support. At this point in my life I'm just doing what I love to do. And that's play steel guitar, and try to have fun doing it.
I'd like to shamelessly "plug" my new CD also. I still have a room full of them left. You can check out the details at my homepage below.
Thanks again,

Both of Randy Beavers CDs (I only know of 2) are awesome. I listen to them both a lot. He makes playing sound so effortless. Then I get inspired, sit down at my PSG and say, "What was I thinking!?"

Randy..you only have 1 room full of CD's left ? Thats pretty good..I know some folks who have 2 rooms of CD's left !
I've had the chance to see and hear Randy a couple of times and speak with him briefly..I think if I had to attach a short descriptor phrase it would be that he "Does not play out of predictable modes"..
Randy's approach is very influencing..
Not taking anything away from all of the great PRO'S and players I have seen in the past several years..each one has a special place in my brain vault..but 2 players that I have recently seen have had a major influence on my approach and thinking, and that would be Randy and Paul...I'm not talking about licks in general, I'm talking about approach and execution.
Now that being said..I sat 4 feet from Buddy in '77 and that too was pretty dramatic ! Oh and Doug and John and Loyd..geesh..the list never ends !
great CD..it's on my regular play list in the car..

First of all...let me just say thanks to you Randy for being such a great friend. Deb and I love you and think of you always. Randy Beavers is first and foremost a man of great character and anyone who knows him will attest to that. There are many good players of the steel guitar and every once in a while one will emerge as a great player...and Randy has certainly achieved that level. Randy Beavers is truely a master of the pedal steel guitar and like none other. Just listen to his voicing...touch...feel and emotion when he is performing...it is masterful. He has inspired me to see things differently in playing this instrument....and has shown me that the pedal steel guitar has a special spot for all music styles to come our way in the future. He can play the old classics as good as it can be done but there is no doubt in the world that he can also change with the newer styles that are coming out everyday as well as much more. Again it's the mark of a true master. And finally let me say this because it's probably the most important thing about him. Randy Beavers is the most caring and unselfish person I know. He will share anything he knows about this instrument and will love doing it every minute of his life. Randy once told me something I shall never forget. He said.."when I show you something you want to learn...do me a favor and show it to someone else and ask them to do the same". And Randy I am doing something about the right hand....call me and I'll tell you...
Friends for a lifetime
