It may be just me, but i've noticed a large majority of the steel players I know personally have had or are having problems with their tickers. Maybe it's from playing all those heart break songs or form the aging of a large percentage of steel players. I personally have problems as well as 4 other players I know. How about you guys?

I suspect it is 3 elements

1) steelers as a group are older than ;
say guitar players.

2) they are always sitting down to play with a more constricted positioning than ;
say piano players.

3) There is a necessary intensity of focus to keep notes intonated correctly even above that of a violin player ;
more notes more stress.

Combine all these :
a group of older men, who are sedentary and under regular stress,
work with secondhand smoke and tend to eat what comes their way on the road too.
hmm

Maybe it's because Steel players have more heart than those who play other instruments. In that respect, I'm not surprised.

Maybe because heart disease is the number one natural killer of men. The older we get, the more likely we'll develop heart disease, Diabetes, Cancer, Etc. (Sorry, I did not mean to be a party pooper)

We've also taken in more than our share of second hand smoke.

Joey: I had bypass surgery because I took in to much "First Hand" smoke. I'm also about to have a stroke because I can get my D lever adjusted right.

What causes Steel players to have Heart problems is Those would be SINGERS, that sing off key, cant phrase, dont know melody, and could not cary a tune in a bucket, if some one put a lid in it for them... That and tone deaf banger players.....Have fun While you can. I know , Quad bypass, later 4 ht. attacks, 3 stints and 3 baloons too boot. I dont want to take the blame that I smoked for over 60 yrs. Its not the age, its the milage,,,,,,ahahah Jennings.

When a an ole' drunk comes up and takes both hands and leans on the top neck of your guitar to ask a question or a request; this is what gives me a heart attack!!!!!!!!!!

I believe it was Weldon who once said..."You can make tens of dollars playing one of these things!"

I think it's just a matter of endless work and toil with little financial reward. It becomes very trying on the soul, and on the body as well. After all, what steeler can retire on his royalties? (I know only two, and one of them's a "maybe".) How many steelers are millionaires? (You can probably count them on one hand!)

Let's face it, rich people get better medical care. The average money-earner's health doesn't fare nearly as well as someone who can say "cost is no object", and afford the best treatments and doctors. And the under-average money-earner will do even worse. So, I write it (the early demise of many steelers) off as caused by nothing more than poverty.
