Terry Crisp, Joe Nichols on GMA today...

Did anyone see this? It sounded excellent, as you'd expect - two songs, and some shots of Terry and his Derby.

The first song, 'Singer With The Band' (?) is from JN's new CD (out today - I'm off to Walmart to get it now), but I'm puzzled. The sound quality for that one was different somehow than for the following tune, 'Brokenheartsville' - is it conceivable that the 'new' song was a 'track' that had been pre-prepared, and that the older song really was 'live' in the studio?

There's no questioning the abilities of ALL the musicians on that stage, but I wonder if the record company was just playing safe with the new release? I could be wrong, of course - did anyone else notice anything?

I just happened to be watching and caught the show also. That is a beautiful guitar. I think that the songs were just meant to be played that way. Why isn't the word passed around to all the guys that when they are going to be on TV to put it here so we can all tune in, or have someone else post it if for whatever reason they don't want to. I really enjoyed that. If you noticed there were some good shots of the psg.

I didn't know, Charles! I was sitting there, coffee in hand, when Diane the Donut announced Joe Nichols!

Incidentally, I've just returned from Walmart where I bought his new CD (if it's HALF as good as the last one, that'll be fine), and I got it for an unbelievable $7.42 inc. tax! It was tagged at $9.72 and the discount was applied at the till.

I'm going to play it now, and I'm dying to hear 'Farewell Party' - Terry Crisp is on the record, and I hope it'll be as wonderful as it was when they did it on 'Austin City Limits' a while back.....

I saw the show and I have always liked the steel playing of Terry Crisp ever since I saw him for the First time in St Louis Mo back at the old place with Shot Jackson. I went to a show with Ricky Skaggs in Flint Michigan some years back and he was great their too.RS

I picked up that CD last week and have been listening to it all week. When you hear Terry play the break on "Farewell Party", it will give you goosebumps. Amen to what Roger said. I listened to the whole shebang yesterday, best thing out of Nashville in a long time. I remember hearing Bobby Braddock do "Revelation" one time.......I was coming home from a really late night date in the early 1970's, and Buddy Ray put it on. Needless to say, it knocked my socks off, never heard it again until this month, although I have read that Waylon recorded it. "What's a Guy Gotta Do" is another good one, and the last cut, Iris Dement's "No Time To Cry" will fry your brain. It is so good to hear someone who can sing that really wants to do COUNTRY music.

Well, that CD's been on in the car all week! It's pretty therapeutic after arduous days rehearsing the Who's 'Tommy', I can tell you (what a racket THAT is!)....

DON'T miss 'Farewell Party'! Joe's voice is perfect, and Terry's steel part is incredible - Joe's the best thing in country music for years!

If you are looking for a country album with lots of steel this is not the one. Terry on one, TW on another. Dan and John H are hardly heard on a couple of others. Spend the money on Jeff's new CD and you will get all of the steel you can handle.

Joe is a very good country singer and I like his music, just not a lot of steel for the money spent.

While I do have a number of steel player's CDs, my preference is for hearing the steel in a broader setting - namely, with a fine interpretive singer. Joe Nichols is exceptional in this regard, and may be the best since Haggard. Brent Rowan's production on this, and Joe's first album, is tasteful and restrained, and he's not afraid to feature full-length steel solos when he feels they're appropriate (more than can be said for many current producers).

I love steel guitar as much as anyone here and, when listening to a track, my ear naturally 'tunes' to the steel-player. But there aren't many steel-only albums that I can listen to at one sitting (one exception being Randy Beavers' new one, but that's hardly country music, anyway) - my taste is for that broader canvas, where the steel is just one of the colours applied.

My point still remains - I'd like everyone here to at least listen to Joe's 'Farewell Party' - even if they DON'T buy the CD - it's a reminder of how powerful this music can be.
