Dan Dugmore "Echo"

I don't know about anyone else, but one of my favorite steel players is Dan Dugmore. I, at times, have modeled my playing style to emulate what he does on songs that in my opinion need that Dan Dugmore touch. I'm not trying to rip his tone off or anything like that, but I'm extremely curious to what kind of delay/reverb combination he uses to get the hollow-haunting sound that he achieves on some of the slower numbers. . . I know it's all in the fingers, but the verb/delay he's using is so cool . . . it's really long, yet it doesn't muddy up his tone or get in the way of his picking. Does anyone know what the trick is? Dan Dugmore is one of my absolute favorites. His sound on "Wild Angels" with Martina McBride was one of the first that caught my ear and made me want to play pedal steel. I worship his tone daily

I believe he tracks with a Fender Twin, and a delay pedal set with the tempo of the song. He sets it for alot of repeats, which adds to the haunting sound. No reverb. That is added in mixdown.

I have had to emulate the sound live with several artists, and I dig it alot.

Carl, you said it right. I am honored to call Dan a friend. He has inspired many of us with the Dan Dugmore style. Sho-Bud Pro-II with Twin reverb with settings all on five from what I saw. 15" speaker. Dan epitomizes the word class.

I got to meet Dan and watch him track on some demos a couple of years ago. He was using a Shobud pro II thu peavy(not sure what model). He was also using a Boss delay pedal. He said he adds his own reverb and delay while tracking so the can't mess it up when mixing.
He was so nice and genuine and offerd a lot of good advice to me as i was new to the instrument.He even called me a couple of weeks later to give me some more steel info. It was very encouraging and inspiring that he took the time to help me. At the time i was not aware of his career w/ James Taylor /Linda Ronstadt. Now If i see he is on a record i buy it. He is a great musician who adds so much to what ever he is involved in.

Anytime I hear that Martina McBride song on the radio I notice the pleasingly unique sound of that steel. I was guessing a lot of compression in addition to some type of delay. Very velvety tone.
