Clay Blaker, and Lee Ann Rimes.
Clay, because his music represents the very essence of what music is all about, at least for me. And Tommy D's work on Clay's recordings (and the few times I saw them live) is just phenominal.
Lee Ann, because hearing her first CD finally got me out of an 18-year funk of leaving my guitars in the closet and watching other guys have all the fun.
kind of a twist on the original topic:
I played on a series of Texas Music Showcases a few years ago (Fall 2001) out at the Chicken Coop in Crosby, TX on Wednesday nights, where we were backing a different singer every week.
It was very challenging and rewarding trying to get a grasp every week of entirely new material in time to do the show. We had 6 weeks booked, but the last one got cancelled (club owner went goofy on us).
We did these 5 shows before it ended:
Tommy Alverson
Johnny Wolfe
Randy Corner
Bill Pekar
Shane Welch

Connie and Ray.....but.... I can't play anything like Weldon, Buddy, Dumplin or Jack Smith.

I'd say Ray Price, Johnny Bush, and Darrell McCall. That way I wouldn't have to learn any new songs. 
If worse came to worse I could throw Ray Charles in there somewhere. |

| A week ago I wouldn't have had an answer for this question. After hearing laney hicks sing "cry" on randy beavers set this past weekend I would have to pick laney as the person I would most like to back. |

I agree with Carl here -- Connie Smith, and I can tell you it was great -- I got to do some TV shows with both Connie and Emmylou Harris out here in NZ and it was awesome. Very humbling experience to work with such legends.

The first country style name to come to my mind as wanting to back is David Allen Coe.
I love to play along with his CD's!
I'm surprised to see so many Jerry Gar votes.

with out an hesitation i would have to say Dave Owens. He is the upright bass player i work with on sunday nights. guy could sing into a bucket and sound like it was straight out of the studio. I have never seen a voice like his before. And his bass playing ain't to shabby either!

| I'd have to say my wife, Darlene. She can sing like Connie Smith, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, Patty Loveless, EmmyLou Harris. Just about any girl singer. I worked with her for 12 yrs, then I married her. We've been together for 20 happy years. I wouldn't trade her for a new steel, new pickup, or a new rifle or shotgun. But, I guess I'm just predjudice. |
