Playing more in tune than the piano player or less in tune than the fiddle player.

"Pulling" more "Tail" than the lead singer. Or the drummer. Or the Fiddle or bass player. Or the roadie. Or the guy that is buddies with the fiddle player's sister's boyfriend.

In ’77–’78, I was working with Opry Artist, Stonewall Jackson. One week-end, a day before we were to leave out, I was instructed to drive from Nashville to Whitehouse, Tn., pick up the Bassman (Band-Leader) and the two of us were to drive to Brentwood, Tn. area and clean out the Tour Bus, and then return the Bassman to White House and then drive back home to Nashville. This would have been at least 80 mi., round-trip! The Bassman himself really didn't want to make the trip and I too did not wish to do so, before the leaving day, especially! So the request was not fulfilled. After leaving the next day and arriving at the 1st. venue, the Band-Leader was instructed by the ‘Big Boss’ to bless me with a “Two-Week Notice” of ‘Termination of Employment’. My one consolation was that I had driven this trip using my own vehicle! Therefore, I took it upon myself to leave immediately ‘after that Show’. For several weeks after that, I wore a Football-Style Band T–Shirt bearing the Numbers 00. Image Image Has anyone heard from this Artist, Lately? Lately? Lately?
I would have been perfectly willing to clean the Bus early-morning, before we left! But, we didn't have that option, however; the Bassman didn't lose his job over it!

I probably shouldn't enter in to this (in fact I KNOW I shouldn't), but I'm going to anyway. This reminds me of a thread months ago as to who had the "best gig". With the speed of P.F., or T.W., a whole bunch of people got to their respective keyboards - computer that is - and names of entertainers flew from all directions! Based on what - they were someones favorite singer. Some of the names that showed up left me shaking my head. Like SOME of you, I've spent many years working music halls, fairs, festivals, etc. I've spent MANY a show playing for, or being on the show with any number of "stars" in the country music business. Some of them lack a hell of a lot to be desired. Here's my point. While he's not mine, L.V.D. is SOMEONES favorite singer SOMEWHERE. If that "someone" is a picker of sorts, I'd bet that he/she would think that working for him is the best damned gig that ever came around the bend. I wouldn't want it, but I wouldn't want a steady job with alot of names in that past thread. Again, like SOME of you, I've seen some of these cats in action. The moods, the booze/dope, some of the people that they drag around with them - male AND female - who would be a pain in anyones ass that they're around. I guess that maybe I shouldn't have started in on this, but I'm still laughing at some of the names given as to who would be the "best person - therefor best gig" to have. I guess that since I'm already "butt deep in the water", I'll also say two other things. One is that the most sastisfing, and most enjoyable job that I ever had, which was backing different G.O.O. stars by chart work, was at a hall that was ran by some of the sleaziest people that I've ever met in my 54 years. One more and I'll let you go. A well known, (and VERY good), musician made mention of a nice bonus presented him at the end of his tenure. Now I guess that he sees things his way, and I see them mine. I'll tell you all one thing though - after being with bands that shared the stage with this musicians "star" and troupe MANY times,(my point in saying this is that it was ALWAYS the same - every time), they would have had to paid me that bonus amount EVERY year, PLUS a good salary, just to put up with some family members (can you say "daddy")? Three nights on the bus, and they would have had me in Michigan City for murder. Sorry about being so "long-winded", and off of the subject, but I've chuckled over that other thread many times, and I'm starting to see some of the same points in this one...

I also (more or less) lost my gig in ‘71–’72 while working with Billy Walker. It turned out to be (more or less) a ‘snap-decision’ as a result of me having a ‘lead-foot’, while driving the Stretch-Limo on I40, heading home from a week-end Tour-Date! However, my job to this day was the very best of all my Nashville employment! No hard feelings, just sorry for the misunderstanding! Turns out, he still expected me for the following Opry Spot!
