Paul Niehaus w/ LAMBCHOP
Yesterday I had the pleasure to see Lambchop live in Berlin in an old theater and it was a really great concert. I follwed the band's career from their first release (in '93 I think) until today and I find the constant changing of this outfit amazing. Starting out as an lo-fi-alt. country band, having a brief stint with 60ies soul and now being back to "Americana" with a little bit of electronica they managed it to be always recognisable. Yesterday there were 11 people on the stage - two drummers, Kurt Wagner, the singer and guitarist, two more guitar players, a saxofonist/guitarst, a keyboarder, a smpler-guy, a piano-player and - Paul Niehaus. On the earlier records he used to play non-pedal-steel, but by now he's playing a LDG and he manages it to add always the right notes. He doesn't play much - and how would that be possible with so many people, but he seems to have a great sense for the right spots. If they're playing near you, you should go see them. It's also quite astonishing that in spite of so many band members the sound isn't too much. They seem to have quite some disclipine...

For those of you not familiar w/ Lambchop, check em out, they play the oddest type of country-detroit swing-dirge music. Truly beautifull and sufficiently weird for my taste. Never seen em live, but they have been known to carry as many as 17 musicians on tour w/ em.

Lambchop is not only a great band, but super sweet fellas, taboot. I learned to play steel on tour and Paul helped me out in Europe every time I saw him. He also plays with Calexico, a superb outfit out of Tuscon, as well as on John Stirratt's (Wilco) project The Autumn Defense. Can't say enough nice things about Paul.

I know this is quite an old thread, but I did a search for Paul Niehaus and Lambchop and this is what I came up with. I recently heard bits and pieces of the album "Nixon" and was very impressed with the way the steel interacted in a non-country environment. I was curious if anyone knew anything further about Paul or other similar recordings.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Paul Niehaus is also all over Calexico's last few releases. He's a good player in my opinion, someone who fits his sound into the overall music.
