Roy has courtesly forwarded a copy of his newest CD "Footprints". There are 13 of my favorite songs on this booger and if you want to hear PEEWEE KING steel, played by the original this is the ticket for you. I don't know if it's available on b0b's Forum or not, but if so grab a copy, pop a cool one (your choice) and just relax to some super steelin'.
The liner notes on the CD are simply a trip down memory lane.

I just want to say that Roy is a true treasure. Not only for the contributions he has made to music but also for the fine gentlman he is. I'm listening to this c.d. as I type this and from his touch I can tell that his main influence is Jerry Byrd. This c.d. is so easy to listen to and just relax and recall a much simpler time.
Do yourselves a favor and order this c.d. from Roy. You'll be glad you did.

Fred, Mike and Al,
Thanks for the good word. I just received a limited number of copies last week from Mike's wife, Teresa, who did the art work and is handling the duplication of copies. I am currently developing a web site while we are in the secluded cabin in the NC mountains, and expect to have it completed and on line by the time we return home on or about June 26 -- and the full order should be delivered by that time. I will have ordering information on the site and will provide a link to it on the Forum.
Meanwhile, I only have a limited number of copies ready to be shipped -- but if any of you believe those exaggerated reports above and wishes to order one now You may contact me via email at RoyAyres@earthlink.net .
Thanks again for the positive reviews.

Folks, Roy is too humble. What a gentleman!!
It was a great priviledge for me to have been in Buras's studio and to watch one of our legends play all those beautiful chords per Alvino Rey, Noel Boggs, Joaquin Murphy. Speedy West, etc. Roy gave me the opportunity to "SEE" how it was done in the good ole days. Now you all can hear it on this CD of his. Great job, Roy. Thanks for giving me this pleasure and I am really enjoying my copy of your CD "Footprints". Thanks again.

I too have recieved Roy's CD today. Roy had wrote me that he was sending me one.
Now remember I am not a critic. I have known Roy for a while now and we have exchanged e mail and on occasion have spoke on the phone.
I got to know Roy pretty well,he seemed to be
considerate and soft spoken and generous and most of all a down to earth kind of a gentleman, which those attributes makes him a first hand class man.
Again I am NOT a critic, after listening to
Roy's CD, I was not at all suprised at the material he chose,I was amazed at his dexterity and ease of playing and NOT trying
to outdo anyone.
Roy explained that he wanted to make a CD to be remembered by his loved one's after he is gone. I listened to a steel guitar that echoed exactly what kind of a human being Roy
Ayres is. His playing reflects his easy going
personality. His playing is different to my ears than anything I have heard for sometime
and I cant honestly say I have heard better.
His style is obvious of being a non pedal player for years and that is an advantage to my way of thinking. I could very well e mailed Roy rather than post this but I felt that I wanted to give credit where credit is due and to let everyone know my feelings regarding Roy's effort on "Footprints".
It is quite obvious that as I listened to his playing that he was influenced by the love of his family and with that in mind was
NOT playing for musicians and the end result
was and is a fine recording by Roy.
We are aware that Roy has been off the instrument for many years just as I have and yet the inspiration and love for his friends and family, and he has adapted well to his Sierra guitar which he purchased a short time
ago. Roy has made an everlasting "Footprint"
on me and my wife for all his and Roy's wife
Laurie have. The CD seals my knowing exactly
the kind of man and musician he is.
I recall a singer back years ago that said to the band leader that he the singer was not able to get the feel he wanted in a studio and asked something that some thought
was peculiar. This singer asked that a gal be brought into the studio so that he could sing to that gal. Sounds strange maybe, but not to me.
Roy has impressed me from day one as the type
of man he is and when I heard his music it made me feel something I havent felt for a long time.I felt emotionally overcome and knew all to well that like that singer who asked for that gal,I felt that Roy was thinking of his wife Laurie and his family and that moved me.
His beautiful rendition of "Over The Rainbow"
was according to Roy for my 9 year old granddaughter who lost her grandmother this past week. It made me sad and yet proud to hear the greatness of someone we all know as Pee Wee Kings steel player years ago.
But to hear Roy play on a fairly new instrument with pedals only once again proved
to me that his knowledge and feel of a non pedal guitar has been the roots of his wonderful CD.
I am so happy that Roy did this for his loved ones and I'm sure the title fits the mood and since I am not family I feel as though Roy was playing some of those tunes for those he loves. As Bill Stafford pointed out Bill heard traces on those great players
of yesteryear However, to my ears Roy played
much different and had more soul than most anyone I have ever heard before.
Most players today with the exception of few great ones sound somewhat alike.
Roy sounds like a man full of compassion and love for his family and friends and that is what makes "Footprints" a great effort by a fine human being. A note accompanied the CD and it said..Jody and Marilyn, I hope this CD brings a smile to your faces in fact it may give you both a laugh. Well my friend you
touched me more than you know. Marilyn and myself had tears in our eyes after hearing the Lords Prayer.
I have to openly admit that I have heard a few other renditions but under the circumstances I feel that Roy out did himself
on this wonderful piece of music.
He most certainly left a footprint on my heart and for that I say Bravo Roy..just as the loving husband and father you are, it all comes through in your CD. I know this is a long explanation and I could have e mailed Roy rather than take others time, but I felt that I wanted to fully explain my appreciation to Roy Ayres.
Thank You for thinking of me and I am most grateful to call Roy my friend.
Be well my friend, You have done yourself and your loved one's proud and from myself and Marilyn Thank you for something that we will treasure for as long as we are able to.
Best
Jody
edited to apologize for the lenght of this post, most of my posts are long, but I felt that I had to give my all for someone who gave his all for his family and friends.
Could have just said GREAT ROY...but that would not tell how I feel at this moment.
Thanks to all of you for hopefully understanding why my comments were so long.
If I ever wrote a long post, this one is for a good cause and well deserved for Roy. Roy
did it the old fashioned way,and he earned it.
Best to all of you patient people.

I have been on the road for the last few weeks and have yet to get my copy of Footprints from RJ. However...having been in the studio with Roy...and helping this living legend lay the tracks for it
I cannot help but to reflect on the emotional highs that we all had during the recording of all of the songs. What a great CD this is. I will treasure it along with the memories of recording it...for many years to come. Thanks for those memories Mr. Roy......Hal

Bill Stafford - I can not say it any better than you! Roy has THAT TOUCH. I'm still enjoying his CD. I especially like his soft--non-invasive style. I remember when Roy took off with Pee Wee King: I was in Meridian, Ms. playing with the Big Diamond Band; everyone was elated when we heard that Roy had joined the Golden West Cowboys. I, along with many of you, have encouraged Roy to get his axe back out since he joined the 4um. I'm sure we're all glad he did. HJ |

I fully concur with all thats been said about Mr Roy. The first time I met Roy Ayres was at Buck Lake Ranch, Angola Indiana. This was back about 1948 or 49 I believe.I was a fifteen year old kid with a little Gibson lapsteel. There was this gracious man playing as good a steel as I ever heard. Then to meet him again over a half century later blew my mind.I consider him a legend...not only for his music but he is just a class act.
I hope someday he does a biography , even if it's just a short one. If there ever was a role model, this gentelman is it.
We are so greatful to have him in our Florida Steel Guitar Club.I'm proud to call him my friend..

You guys are too kind. I sincerely appreciate the positive remarks and I consider each of you a special friend.
I finally got enough of my web site constructed to go on line with it. I invite all of the above and any other steelers to check out my "Photo Album" on the site and -- if you don't find your picture there -- I would like to have one. Attach it to an email and I will be honored to post it in my album. The web site is RoysFootprints.com |
