MicroCube replacement speaker - Will this work?

Gerald,

I would fill the enclosure with the polyfil, but not pack it in there tight. Be careful not to block the port. The speaker does need to move some air. If it helps the bass, then you can start taking some out of the amp if the tone is not to your liking. If it helps the bass some but not enough, you can start packing it in a little tighter.

I lined my cabinet with 3/4" insulation from a hardware store, but the polyfil should do the same thing. I was looking for it and could not find it in Dallas. It is a good suggestion to go to a fabric store. I did not do that.

OK! That's it! The search for the Holy Grail is over! The laws of physics and the Roland corporation have won.

Today I spent $1.99 on one pound of 100% pure polyester fiberfill (perfect for stuffed toys, handcrafted dolls and decorator pillows! )at my local JoAnn Fabrics store. Talk about being a minority and a stranger in a strange land... every church lady in the tri-county area had their suspicious eyes on me the whole time I was in the store.

Here are my results:

Cramming the Microcube to the max with fill:
The bass was indeed tighter but everything else suffered. The treble was nearly gone. Had to turn the treble to 11 on both the guitar and amp to get any brightness.

Loosely filling the MC with fill leaving the vent hole open:
The treble still suffered and the overall tone was choked sounding. The bass was a little tighter.

No fill at all:
The best treble and bass that can be achieved with 2 watts and a 4" speaker.

OK Roland you win. Good job designing this amp/speaker combo.

So now what do I do with 1 lb. of 100% pure polyester fiberfill?

JoAnn is the best! It's wierd, isn't it, to be in there.

Very interesting results. Tighter bass: more base, or clearer-sounding?

Those are some different results than I got lining the walls with insulation. I just played my Casino Elite, Dynalap 8-string, Rick B6, and a Gibson SG through the MC and had to turn the treble down on all using the Black Panel and JC Clean. The neck pick-up on the SG and Casino did not have to be at full treble.

I will venture into the land of the women this week and get some fiberfill to see if I get similar results to yours. If lining the walls versus stuffing the cabinet make a big difference, I'll let you know.

That sock monkey looks like it's got plenty of fill to me. I think JoAnn would have a heart attack!

Gerald,

I filled with my MC with lots of fiberfill and it still had more than enough treble. Normally it would be something like the polarity on the speaker being reversed that is causing the difference in tone we are getting. My MC has a small connector for the "-" side and a large connector for the "+" side. They can't be reversed. I would think yours is the same way.

I'm sorry the sock monkey treatment didn't work out.
