I need to learn a song, but the only reference I have is the key and 1 word from the set list.

It goes "If you're sweetheart sends a letter of goodbye.... It's no secret, you'll feel better.." etc.

What's the correct title and artist? That'd help me find it in the record shops, I think.

Thanks!

It was,indeed,Johnny Ray that had the first hit on it,back in '51,& later,Lynn Anderson. Can't remember what year she did it though.

Showing my age, but the B side of Johnny Ray's Cry was " The Little White Cloud That Cried". Richard

When I think of "Cry", I think of it as being THE big tour de force number for all the talent contest singers in the 70's & 80's. When done right, it was an almost guarantied win for the contestant! Unfortunately, almost every band I played it in consistantly screwed it up. Most often because of the ubiquitous lousy C&W bass player that we've all played with one time or another. This usually caused the wanna be star and their entire posse to give ugly, threatening looks to the band. It's so nice in my old age to play with guys now who know more than 3 chord songs.

I liked Cry alot more than some of the new "tour de force" tunes I have to fake through lately at contests.

Just received this from Lloyd Green:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Lynn Anderson's version of "Cry" was released on Columbia Records January 29, 1972 and eventually reached #3 on Billboard's charts. Yes, I played steel on her record."
What a great song and one of my all time favorites, and just for the record Laney Hicks sang it in Dallas at the TSGA show a couple of weekends ago and I don't have to tell you what a fantastic job she did. Randy Beavers has a great new CD coming out pretty soon and Laney is singing the song on his CD. Watch for it !!!!!!!!!
I'm not absolutely sure, but; I think I still have my Johnny Ray version on an old 45rpm somewhere in my collection! I used to really like that tune also! Old man that I am!
Thank's everyone. This is the one.
I found 2 versions of this tune on Walmart's new music service. Lynn Anderson Live at Billy Bob's, which has some neat steel guitar playing on it, and Johnny Ray's 16 most requested tunes. Downloaded them both, 88 cents each, plus tax. I wonder how much of that will go to the artist? But, now I know what it is I'll be looking for Lynn's record from 1972
It does have some changes that I don't often get to play.. Should be fun to figure them out.
Thanks again, y'all
