#5 The guy was on TV again tonight! Is he flavor of the month or what? This time it was Carson Daily and the Late Late Late Show. He was the "house band" which was kind of nice cuz he was playing all the segments on and off the stage for the whole show. He did a fair variety of different grooves at different levels of intensity. Looks like he using a Stevens bar. Has he been on Sesame Street yet? |

Not Much to Say Stephen. I have my sights set a little higher than RR, My hopes for the future of steel guitar are guys like Randy Beavers and Mike Bagwell who are a little more technically proficient than the above mentioned. Way back there is a young kid named Jeb Balwin that will be known in a few years too. Jeb does it lefthanded too.
Never saw either one of them kick their seat over, Does this mean they aren't COOOOOL [This message was edited by John Floyd on 13 March 2004 at 03:39 AM.] |

My hopes for the steel guitar are to have somebody do that one really cool, concise, but intense solo on a major pop hit.
This would bring the instrument into greater if not great, popularity.
And it IS possible.
It only takes the producer of a major act to hear Lloyd Green's solo on Remember When,
and couple that in his head with RR's success and say,
hey this is new, lets try it on this other cut.
Ya got 12 bars to do magic; go for it.
And then include that solo in the music video too.
So it ain't country... so what, if it brings new popularity to the PSG then it is for the good. Period![This message was edited by David L. Donald on 13 March 2004 at 03:47 AM.] |

I opened up my new issue of "Music Trades" magazine yesterday and there was a full page picture of Robert, sitting at his "Fessy" with the logo prominently displayed (although in soft focus). The page is an advertisement for the Crate "Blue Voodoo" tube amp, which Robert uses and endorses???
First time I had run across a steel guitar pictured in Music Trades in several years, other than the small ad for the Carter Starter, burried in the back pages. He is bringing the steel guitar back into the spotlight! Larry J. Walton Music, Walton, NY |

#15 He can play, but in terms of highlighting an 'instrument' with respect to the public, I think Sting got more popular press publicity for playing the hurdy gurdy at the Oscars than Robert gets for the steel.
Saw in the recent issue of Newsweek all about Sting's hurdy gurdy, but I haven't seen a Newsweek article on the steel guitar, but then maybe I need to look harder. According to the article, Sting is a novice player (only using the drone strings for the televised appearance) and more or less his use was reported a nice prop. But according to Newsweek, the hurdy gurdy community was getting a lot of interest generated from the inquiring minds of the public. I'd be curious as to how much steel guitar publicity would happen if Sting uses a pedal steel for a "prop" at the next Oscars. He could start a new cause, call it the "Foundation for the Advancement of Lesser Known Instruments". Unfortunately, he would probably pick the didgeridoo for his next instrumental cameo.

Sting uses steel on some of his records (B J Cole). I'm not sure that he understands the instrument's potential, though. He tends to use it only when he wants to add a "country" flavor. B J can play any style, given half a chance.

JB, You were way too pessimistic! I did a count on all the RR threads in the last 30 days - guess what: So far we have 392 replies (probably I missed a few)!
But still nobody has answered my question at #4: Who is Robert Randolph?
Kind Regards, Walter
